Velocity of Explosive IVaves.
Borilielot made a lnyTO number of
experiments to determine tho veloc-
ity of tlw explosive vavca in tho
caso of dilferent explosives. Lo:rr,
narrow tubes made of lead, tiff or
britannia metal were used and (lie
rate of propagation of disturbance
through mo tube measmjd. He
found this to depend o:i—(1) tho di-
ameter of tho tube, (2) the density
of tho explosive, (3) the resistance*
of tho material of tho tube. Tho ex-
plosive wave from compressed grin
cotton had a mean velocity of 5,200
meters per second in lead tubes and
of 6,000 meters per second in tin
tubes.
Liquid nitroglycerin gave results
varying from 1,073 to 1,386 meters
per second, whilo dynamite had a
mean rate of 2,54-3 meters per sec-
ond. It was found a matter of gren
difficulty to detonate the nitroglyc
erin in such narrov.* tubes. A curi
ous feature wns that whether tjhe
tubes were curved or straight tlicro-
sults obtained were substantially tho
same lluowledgo.
