California has come to the

much method in that kind of
madness.
In a lecture at New York,
Friday night, Lillie Devereux
Blake said: "In this republic
it is a crime to be a woman;
and she is punished for her sex.
If a woman makes a mistake it
is telegraphed all over the coun-

To Keep Peas from tii« Weevil.
A Missouri farmer, writing to
the "Rural New Yorker," makes
the following excellent sugges-
tion in regard to the. preserva-
tion of seeds: "I have saved
my seed beans and peas for the
last two years from the weevil
by shelling out the seed and
putting it in empty baking
powder cans along with small
bits of gum camphor. Before I
tried this remedy I lost nearly
all the seed I saved, but since
then I have had no trouble.
Three peices the size of a bean
are sufficient for a pint can-
one in the bottom of the can,
one in the middle and one on
top. By the way, I find these
empty baking powder cans
very handy and convenient for
keeping seeds. I have a num-
ber, and by labeling them and
having a shelf made to hold
them, I find them very neces-
sary, lor by their means I can
tell at a glance just what is in
each can,, and they keep the
seeds dry and unexposed. A
little care ip saving them as fast
as emptied will prove quite con-
venient in saving seed, and by
taking pains always to save the
best and earliest producc for
seed one is sure of good, pure
seed,'besides saving consider*
able expense every year in pur-
chasing what one might save
with very little trouble'"
Forty Year's Experience of an Old Nurse.
Mrs. Winslow's Soothing Syrup, for
children teething, is the prescription of one
of ihe best female physicians and nurses
in the United States, and has been used
for forty years with never-failing success
by millions of mothers for their children
It relieves the child from pain, cures dys-
entery and dirrhcea, griping in the bowels
and wind colic. By giving health to the
child it rests the mother. Wc would say
to every mother who has a child suffering
from any of the foregoing complaints. Do
not let your prejudices, nor the prejudices
of others, stand between your suffering
child and the relief that will be sure—yes,
absolutely pure—to follow the use of this
medicine. Sold by druggists throughout
the world. Price 25 cents a bottle.
The Thirty-second Assembly
of Missouri, which has just ad-
journed, was unusually liberal
toward educational and chari-
table institutions in that State.
One-fourth of the revenue for
1883-84 goes to common
schools, while the permanent
school fund is increased by
2200,000. Lincoln Institute, a
colored seminary, is aided to a
considerable extent. The State
University at Columbia is to
receive £175,000. More than
lalf of this sum, however, goes
or building purposes. Other
generous appropriations are re-
)orted. Among the minor laws
respecting education was one
allowing courts to establish
colored schools when the school
commissioners fail to provide
or them.
As a standard remedy for the permanent
cure of chronic female complaints, English
Female Bitters has won tne grand prize
over alt competition in the United States.
Married ana single ladies arc delighted

On Thursday last a bill was
introduced in the New York
senate, and immediately order-
ed to its third reading, to pre-
vent any attempt to personate
Jesus Christ by any show play
or dramatic representation,
whether free or for an admission
fee, and declares a violation of
its provisions a misdemeanor,
punishable by a fine of not less
than % 100, and imprisonment
for not less than six months.
The New York World has
expressed the opinion that
there are but four democrats in
tbe porty-eighth congress who
are capable of intelligently dis-
cussaing the tariff. There are
a good many more than four
who can talk tariff understand
ingly when occasion demands
such discussion, but if they are
wise they will let the subject
neat wh^re it is until the demo-
cratic party has power to pass
a revenue reform bill.—Wash-
ington Post, Dem.
A cow will give more milk

ing one of a dull dark character
The animal eats more heartily
digests better, while the vita
forces are active during the
pleasant day. These tacts are
not, in themselves, very impor
tant, yet they suggest the query
whether close stabling of cows
in winter or summer is better
than giving them the run ot the

The Pecos River is a brisk
running stream always very
muddy and has the appearance
of being on the rise all the time,
t has its source in New Mexi-
co, and it is said to be about
700 miles in length and affords
more water than any other
stream in Texas though it is
not so broad as many others.
It is said by parties who are
amiliar with it from its mcuth
that it could be made naviga-
te with but little expense as
ligh up as the T. P. crossing.
Stock pens have been erected
at Pecos station, and consider-
able stock will be shipped from
that point this year.—Colorado

"I say, Featherweight," said

As marine plants do not ex-
ist at depths of more than 830
feet, or thereabouts, M. A:
Milne Edwards concludes that
the plant-eating animals ol the
deep-sea wastes must live upon
food produced at the surface
and gradually dropped into the
depths beyond the region of
plant-growth.
Prof. Bing, of Germany, as-
serts that chloride of lime has
given good results as an anti-
dote to snake-poison when in-
troduced under the skin near
the wound. In cases where
the patients failed to recover,
the fatal effect of the poison
was evidently retarded by the
chloride ol lime solution.

Mr, A. A. Common, the Eng-

Among the grants of the

is one of $300 to an entomolo-

Carefully recorded observa-
tions extending over a period
of twenty years have shown
Dr. C. C. Abbott that the au-
tumnal storing of nuts by squir-
rels, the building of winter
houses by muskrats, and other
habits of these and other ani-
mals, or the absence of such
habits, have no relation to the
mildness or severity of the
winter whi.:h follows. It thus
appears that such creatures are
no more reliable as weather-
prophets than the human char-
latans who claim to foresee
storms months in advance, and
another widespread and deep-
rooted notion is proven to be
groundless.
Comparatively few plants
were known to the ancients,
progress in botanical knowledge
having made wonderful addi-
tions to the catalogue in recent
years. According to a German
authority; Hippocrates describ-
ed 234 species, Theophrastus
followed with 500, and—as
nearly as can be ascertained—
Pliny knew 800. Even as re-
cently as the date of Linnaeus'
death—1778—only 7294 had
been described, although Tour-
nefort had claimed 10,146. Ear-
ly in the present century De
Candolle made 30,000 named
species; and Lindley, in 1853,
placed the number at 92,920.
At the present time nearly
150,000 species are known, and
it is quite possible that twice as
many actually exist,
Another Southern outrage:
