Whiskey In the Maine Legislature.
From the Boston Post.
Ex Ccongressman Llewllyn
Powers, who is a member of the
Maine. Legislature, and who
voted against submitting the
liquor amendment to the Con-
stitution to the people, says
that soon after the vote was
taken a member who voted in
favor of the amendment invited
him to "take somethin," but,
being a teetotaler, he had to'
decline. The ex-Congressman
spoke facetiously, for, although
a temperance man, he is not
a total abstainer. -Put 'his
remark illustrates the hypocrisy
and sham of prohibition in
Maine. There are scores of
men in the Maine Legislature
who talk and vote for it, for
political effect, but who drink
whiskey whenever they can get
it. This statement is made
after personal investigation, and
the writer will swear before any
Justice of the Peace that accord ■
ing to his knowledge and belief
it is a true one.

Who Is Mrs. Winslow.'
As this question is frequently asked, wc
will simply say that she is a lady who for
upwards of thirty years has untiringly de-
voted her time and talents as a female phy-
sician and nurse, principally among chil-
dren. She has especially studied the con-
stitution and wants of this numerous class,
and, as a result of this effort, and practical
knowledge, obtained in a lifetime spent as
a nurse and physician, she has compoun-
ded a Soothing Syrup for children teething.
It operates like magic—giving rest and
health, and is' moreover, sure to r> gulate
the bowels. In consequence of this article,
Mrs. Winslow is becoming world-renowned
as a benefactor of her race; children cer-
tainly do rise up and bless her; especially
is this the case in this city. Vast quanti-
ties of the Soothing Syrup aie daily sold
and used here. We think Mrs. Winslow
has immortalized her name by this invalua-
ble article, and we sincerely believe thous-
ands of children have been saved from an
early grave by its timely use, and that mil-
lions yet unborn will share its benefits, and
unite in calling her blessed. No Mother
has discharged her duty to her suffering
little one, in our opinion, until she lias giv-
en it the benefit of Mrs. Winslow's Sooth-
ing Syrup. Sry it, mothers- try it now.—

Whittier recently received
from a Chicago woman 200 of
her visiting cards, with a re-
quest to write his name on each,
as she was to give a reception,
and desired to present her
guests with some memento of
the event.
The star-route trial is costing
about $3,000 per week, and it
will take anywhere from six
weeks to six months to finish
up the trial. Conviction comes
high in high places, but the
country won't grumble if con-
viction finally comes.
When a Chicago artist sold a
a picture to a saloon keeper
for £5000, a friend deplored
that it should go to a drinking
place. The artist replied:
"More art judges will see it
there than would see it on the
wall of an art institution."
The Chicago College of Phy-
sicians has been sued by a stu-
dent who was promised a grad-
uate's diploma at the end of
one year's study. The faculty
declined to keep the agree-
ment, which was made, they
say, by an individual teacher.
Even so dull a thing as a de-
bate in congress on the tariff
question may be enlivened with
a little jocularity. The other
day the witty Mr. Cox of New
York, declared himself in lavor
of the protecton of castor oil,
because it was an infant indus-
try.
The analeps, a viviparous fish
of eastern Asia, has a singular
eye. It is divided horizontal
into two hemispheres by a mem-

perfect organ of vision. The
two upper halves are long sight-
ed, and the two lower ones near
sighted.
The Sheriff of Northampton
county, Pennsylvania, not only
took a bribe of $50 for the ser-
vice of an execution earlier
than its proper turn, but de-
fended the act on the ground
that his predecessors had always
accepted money under such cir-
cumstance?.
The country editor now takes
up his pen to say: "We have
received from Hon. Fixem Per
kins, member of congress, sev-
eral very valuable public docu-
ments, for which he will please
accept our thanks." Then he
lays it down again and calls out
to the office boy: "Here, John,
throw these into the waste pa-
per barrel," adding to himself:

Bailey's Saline Aperient is now recog-
nized as the best and cheapest, and most
pleasant cathartic in use, for the special cure
of headache, constipation, heartburn, acid

it is delightful.
A soap mine has been dis-

purposes, it is a fair substitute
for manufactured soap.
Rl'NEWING AN OLD ANNOUNCE-
MENT.
The real value of an article can only be
proven by a practical test. This is the pre-
cept of the oldest tradesmen in the world
men who, knowing the character ol their
goods, do not fear the result of a practical
trial. Some peodle may term this egotism,
but it is nothing more than honest dealing
Dr. Swayne made this announcement years
ago when his Pills for Dyspepsia. Bilious-
ness, Sick Headache and Spring Com-
plaints, were first intioduced and he reiter-
ates it now. Tile reward of merit is suc-
cess.

The Cotton Worm.
New oceans Times Democrat.
Prof. Riley, entomologist of
the Agricultural Department,
who has been investigating the
habits of the cotton worm, and
who has published several
pamphlets on this subject,
thinks the worm deserves still
further investigation, particul-
arly as to its source and origin,
and for that purpose will send a
sub-commission to Brazil to
study the character of thoSe
South American insects, which
are destructive of vegetation,
but more especially of the cot-
ton plant.
Prof. Riley estimates that the
South loses an average of jSi 5,-
000,000 yearly from the cotton
worm. He is not satisfied with
the presenjjmode of meeting its
ravages, the outlay for materials
being too heavy for the planters
to bear, and he aims to discov-
er some means by which this
destructive little insects can be
annihilated, so that it will never
visit the cotton fields again.
The Brazilian Cotton Worm
Commission will be under the
charge of Mr. John C. Branner
who has already made several
visits to Brazil, which country
he is thoroughly acquainted
with.

The Baltimore Sportmens
Association is wagnig war on
the swivel or pot-hunter's guns.
They have destroyed seven of
these weapons during the past
season, and are raiding the vi-
cinity for more. To understand
the reason for the raid it is on-
ly necessary to say that the
guns are enormously destruct-
ive and are calculated in a short
time to annihilate the ducks.
The guns are used on a pivot
and lashed to a boat. A single
discharge of the weapon at long
range, if well directed, will
bring down from 500 to 800
ducks. Sometimes the boat
from which the weapon is fired
will not hold the dead ducks,
to say nothing of the maimed
and crippled birds that remain
in the water.

The Pennsylvania House of
representatives has passed a
bill granting a pension of £40
and an annuity of 5120 to sol-
diers and widows of soldiers of
the war of 1812. It is estima-
ted that these pensions will
cost the state at least $200,000
a year. The Philadelphia Press
says the soundest objection to
granting these pensions seems
to be that the United States
should take care of the surviv-
ors of the war of 1812, as their
service was to the general gov-
ernment, and not to Pennsyl-
vania alone.

W If there ever was a specific lor any
one complaint then Carter's Little Liver
Pills arc a specific for Sick Headache; and
every woman should know this. They are
not only a positive cure, but a sure preven-
tive if taken when the approach is felt.
Carter's Little Liver Pills act directly on
the liver and bile, and in this way remove
the cause of disease without first making
you sick by a weakening purge. If you
try them you will not be disappointed. Sold

Mr. Murat Halstead, editor of

Gazette, finds some good in the
flood. It is proposed to raise a
commission of the best citizens
to superintend the expenditure
of $1,000,000 in reconstructing

possible to clean the streets, and
the city would thus have cause
