About Barefoot Boys »nd Some Other
Things.
About the year the stars fell
1 was one of the boys Whittier
got after about going barefoot,
and about the same time my
father settled in Middle Tennes-
see. It was a new country then,
covered with cane brakes, big
trees, penny royal and "nimbi®
grass." He built a house of
hewed beech logs and opened a
little farm in the woods. It was
there that 1 learned to play
marbles, cat, hot ball and to
swim; to eat may apples and
pawpaws, sour apples and green
winter grapes, from which 1 also
learned to have the colic.
Some time ago I was in Nash-
ville, and remembering all these
things, I concluded to take a run
down to the old place. I hadn't
seen it in a half hundred years.
The train took me to the little
battle soarred town of Spring Hill
in the good old county of Maury,
and a hired horse to the old place
five miles west of the little town,
with Little Carter's creek on the
East and Big Carter's creek a
mile to the West, and all this is
in part, what I want to talk about.
Now this little story of a bare
foot boy may not interest others,
but still if fyou go with me you
may recognize many things that
sounds mighty familiar, for the
life of one bare foot boy is more
or less typical of all.
In any event I am going back
to that goodly land.
A 1*0 d of running; branches and big spring*,
Of creeks &nd big rivers,
Of beeoh groves and big poplar*.
Of white uh and black ash,
Of white oak and black oak,
Of white hickory and black hickory,
Of white walnut and black walnut,
Of sugar tree* and cherry trees,
Of elm, ljn and buckeye,
Of chestnut and iron wood.
A land of apples and pears.
Of peaches and plams,
Of berries, nuts and grapes.
A land of corn, cotton and hemp,
Of wheat, tobacco and oats,
Potato#!, ctbbages and onions,
01 blue grass and clover,
Of paw paws and pumpkins,
Of penov rojal, dog fennel and "nimMe
will" grass,
A land of politicians, three preiilents, Mer-
rii's Clan and Davy Crocket.
A land where the acrpentsitingeth not, and
where ticks and red bugs are unknown, and
where the song of the mosquito is not heard
in the land, and where the weary is at rest.
Such is the land and home I
left five and sixty years ago and
to which sweet memories invite a
return.
And why, it may be asked,
should I leave such goodly land?
Some time I may tell, but not
now.
But I left it, whether for good
or bad I know not. But the ties
of childhood and youth cling to
me through the sixty years that
have passed since.
A bend in the road brought the
old house in full view—that same
old house of hewed beech logs,
now seventy years old, but sound
as when built. The little white
headed boya I was thinking
of, where I found them, proved
to be old white headed men. i
couldn't find a single boy, and I
felt sadly disappointed for it
handn't occurred to me that
they had grown to be old men.
At the same time came in view
the old orchard I helped my
father set half a hundred years
before, and many of the trees
still bearing fruit.
But sixty years makes a vast
difference in a country and its
people. I did not meet more
than a half a dozen people I had
ever seen before. All the others,
so far as could be learned, had
passed away.
I found a vast difference in a
boy's idea of distance and a
man's. There was the same lit-
tle field in which I learned to
plow, whose rows I then thought
was a quarter of a mile long.
Now I easily threw a stone across
the field. The range of hills that
hedged in the great fertile basin,
that stood two miles to the North-
east looked like some giant had
picked them up and dropped
them just back of the garden.
