that meat forests of youthful hope, womanly

Pride in Hw Wife.
"Yes," said old Farmer Jones to
a traveller who was stopping with
him over night, "I've got as good a
wife as any man in these parts, if I
do say it."
"I am not married myself," re-
turned the traveller, "but never-
theless I can appreciate the pride
which a husband may take in a
good wife."
"Why, stranger," went on tho
good old farmer earnestly, "I've
known that woman to get up at 4
o'clock in the mornm', milk six-
teen cows, and git breakfast for
twenty men, an' have the hull thing
done afore snnrise."
"You don't say so," cxclaimed
stranger.
"Yes, sir, and not onct only, but
week in an' week out, an' you kin
see as well as I kin that she ain't
a strong ..woman, nuther."—New

St. Louis Republican.
An old darkey, giving the name
of Anderson Giles and residing at
2210 Franklin avenue, yesterday
applied for and obtained a license
to marry Mrs. Martha Mines, a
widow, aged 40 years, also colored,
living at 2315 Morgan street. The
ola man said he was 104 ears old,
but could not, owing probably to
defect in his chronological educa-
tion, give tho year of bis birth.
The nearest he could oonre to fix-
ing tho date of that important
event was to say. "Yes, chile, 1
was an ole man befo' the wah." As
no law exists to restrain senile in-
fants from contracting matrimony,
the license went forth empowering
him to comfo<% and protect the
confiding Mines. Iu the way of
hair this venerable titndidate for
earthly bliss bad a faiM line of
wool extending around the base of
his cranial development some dis-
tance below the line of the year*
—that was all. The rest of his
skull shone like polished ebony.
His bent form, shrunk shanks and
shrivelled skin looked fitter to
adorn a funeral procession than
preside at a wedding least.
A Sheriff's Curiosity.
The othpr dayamysterious-look-
ing stranger appearod in Petaluma
and remained five whole days with-
out the inhabitants finding out bis
name, where be came from, or 1iis
business. At last the general agi-
tation grew to such a pitch that the
sheriff volunteered to interview
the stranger in behalf of the public
weal. Approaching the taciturn
visitor, as he sat in the office of the
hotel, the functionary remarked:
"Fine day, sir."
"Is, oh?" said tho stranger, du-
biously.
"Going to stay long in those
parts 1"
•'Just two days, two hours and
thirty-one minutes longer," replied
the other, consulting his watch and
a time-table.
"Then—may 1—er, ehem! may
I ask what your business is?" per-
sisted the sheriff, as he gathered
up closer.
"Well, I don't wish it generally
known," replied the stranger con-
fidentially, "but I'm a Russian Ni-
hilist."
MYou don't mo»n it?" gasped
tho official.
"Fact," replied the man mourn-
fully.
"But—er—what brings you here?"
asked the sheriff.
"Well, you see, I was captured
in St. Petersburg last month, and
-you know how severe the gov-
ernment is on Nihilists, don't
you?"
"O! yes, of course; go on."
"Woll, they sentenced me to
twenty years in Siberia or a week
in Petaluma, and I was fool enough
to chose Petaluma."
And with a heavv sigh tho con-
demned man drifted into dinner

The Philadelphia Times writing
of tho attitude of the people ofthe
South, says: "They want to un-
dersell our iron in our own mar-
kets ; thoy want to spin their own
cotton; they want to keep at home
for their own profit, the hundreds
of millions they pay annually to
Northern spindles Jnd Northern
furnaces, and thoy are just appre-
ciating the fact that they have vast
advantages over the Northern
economy of production. Their
climate alone would make Yonkee
ingenuity ami energy outstrip the
North in every industry logically
competing with us, and they are
wisely getting just enough ofthe
Yankee into them to call a halt in
their own servitude to Northefh
industry. These are the chief
reasons why the South turnB a
deaf ear so the syren song of free
trade dreamers and why the South
will soon come up almost in solid
column for a tariff based upon the
actual necessities of the govern-
ment economically administored,
with wise discriminations in favor
of the whole general industries of
the country."
