SOLE AGENT FOB. THE
OFFICE SEEKERS DESPERATE.
A New York correspondent a day
or two since is authority for the
statement that Ifavor Strong "was
beseiged by a real amy of office
seekers' and the news comes from
Kansas that for fourteen appointive
offices tliero are nearly 1400 applica-
tions.
The Houston Post commenting on
this fact says that the fact in this
State and every other from which
we have accounts where the new
administrations have taken place,
is almost a repetition of the in-
stances just mentioned in New York
and Kansas. The average American
will gu any lengths for an office and
often at a positive personal sacrifice,
so strong is the political mania in
the Cnited States, but the unpre-
cedented rush and scramble of late
for even paltry positions unquestion-
ably has a pathetic as well as a
ludicrous side. The hard times have
driven men to seek office who would
not havo dreamed of doing so a year
or two ago. The appointing power
all over the country is saul to be
daily astonished at the respectable
and prominent applications for of-
fices without special honor and but
poor pay. The government places,
National, State and municipal, are
the last hope of drowning men and
while the craze for oflice ordinarily
is to be despised, conditions now
should throw the moutle of chari-
table indulgence over what appears
to be such a selfish and unseemly
scramble. We can only trust that
the necessity which creates it, will
not continue for a much longer
period.
At the time of his death General
George B. McClelland was engaged
in the development of copper mines
in the Texas Pauhandle, from which
he expected rich results. His death
put a loug quietus to the enterprise.
Interest has been revived in it, and
arrangements are now being made
to work the mines.
