Traveling In Bani*.
An American who speaks Russian
is evidently a rare bird. The single
offioer on duty informed us that he
was empowered to attend only to
cases of drunkenness, breaches of
the peace and the like. We must re-
turn the next day.
"No," said I. "Why make us
: "t^aste all that time in beautiful Mos-
cow? Here are our passports to
identify us. Will you please tell the
captain, as soon as he arrives toinor-
- row morning, that wo aro genuine
and request him to sign this petition
and post it?"
The officer courteously declined to
look at thy passports, said that my
j word was sufficient and accepted my
^ commission. Then rising, drawing
himself up, with the heels of his
high, wrinkled boots in regulation
contact and the scarlet pipings of his
baggy green trousers and tight coat
bristling with martial etiquette, ho
made me a profound bow, hand on
heart, and said :
"Madam, accept the thanks of Rus-
sia foi' the high lienor you have done
her in learning her difficult lan-
guage I"
I accepted Russia's thanks with due
pomp and hastened into the street.
That small, low roofed station house
seemed to be getting too contracted
to contain all of us and etiquette —

Sepoy Endurance.
A sepoy regiment will walk a Eu-
j ropean regiment to death and do it
on food which their competitors
would pronounce wholly insufficient
to sustain vigorous life. A regular
Hindoostanee carrier with a weight
of 80 pounds on his shoulders—car-
ried, of course, in two divisions, hung
on his neck by a yoke—will, if prop-
erly paid, lope along over 100 miles
in 24 hours, a feat which would ex-
haust any but tho best trained Eng-
lish runners.
We feel indeed some doubt wheth-
er the relation between the power of
walking and what is properly called
"physical strength" is at all a close
one. Many classes of Bengalese, who
are a feeble folk, seem in walking
tireless, and it is within the knowl-
edge of us all that many compara-
tively feeble Englishmen can walk
all day and sit down at the end far
less fatigued than men who in a
struggle would throw them in five
minutes on their backs. Weight lias
much to do with it, and lung condi-
tion, and above all a certain sound-
ness of the sinews which has no more
relation to the strength of thoso sin
ews than the tenacity of a fiber, silk
for example, has to its bulk. —London

g Detail In Novell.
Miss Braddon has addressed some
warm remarks to her critics by
means of notes, "Furniture In Fic-
a tion," printed in Sala'a Journal. She
declares that there is perhaps no
subject in which the superior critic
and the average novel reader are
more widely opposed than in their
appreciation of detail in fiction. The
critio considers all still life in a novel
aa superfluous and impertinent; he
cannot tolerate an occasional page
devoted to buhl cabinets, Indian
draperies, Dresden china and Ax-
minster carpets. He perceives in-
nate vulgarity in tho writer who ex-
patiates on the rich surroundings of
a millionaire commoner, or who
tries too conscientiously to paint tho
■aural manor house, the nobleman's
|H Elizabethan mansion, the snug and
well formed rectory or the shabby
Bloomsbury lodging. All this sort
of thing enrages the reviewer of the
period, for it is not literature, he de-
clares. Miss Braddon is of a differ-
ent opinion and quotes Homer, Rich-
ardson, Miss Austen and Balzac in
support of her view.

In the Home of Cholera.
India is generally referred to as the
"home of cholera," the disease being
established endemically throughout
a wide area. This, however, is not,
90 most Indian authorities once be-
lieved and many would eveu now
have us believe, due to any mysteri-
ous or unpreventable causes, but in
virtue of conditions which may all
\ of them be removed, and which in
time, I trust, will be removed. In
India, as elsewhere, water has been
the chief nurse and disseminator of
cholera, and I believe that if every
town and village in India were pro-
vided with pure and properly pro-
tected water the so called "endemic
area" would soon become indefinite.
