gestmn's have, so far, been disregarded; ''Npt
an effort has heen made even to promulge the
true doctrines of the party : save. a,few docu-
ments relative thereto, which have found their
way into a few of the Texian newspapers,
not one of the great principles of democracy'
have been laid before tho people of Texas.
The Democrats are supinely trusting to num-
bers to sustain their ascrndancy. They deem
a struggle unnecessary to secure victory. Is
this w ise 1 fa it safe 1
8 The citizens of the " Lono Star" State,
isolated in their position, noSliable to be ex-
cited by the political questions of lbs United
States, Jiave almost lost sight of the' lines of
demarcation between the two 'great parties.
Being now entirely devoid of strong partizan
prejudices, having been accustomed to party
distinctions where the issues were made upon
min and not measures, were their old leaders
to break off from the democrats, they would
be followed by numbers of their adherents.
Should an adroit -Whig, who to preserve his
popularity, changed sides without actually
clianging opinion, to cunningly interweave a
portions of the most specious and captivating
of the Federal Whig doctrine1! along'with. his
pjctended democracy!; the false impression
tllus made, could be eradicatedf only by time
ai,d effort, if ever. To turn public sentiment
into the proper channel, vwhen once diverted
thsrefrom, is a work of great magnitude.
Lt the lines be fairly and fully drawn at once,
asd the Democrats will be saved the danger of
hivving their -ranks thinned by desertion, from
the defectionjtJpmen of great personal popu-
larity, any other cause, and Teras will be
democratic almcsf mmcimousJy,.
The Whigs have been studious in depreca-
ting party di stinctions, and party organiza-
tion representing the people of Texas as a
bind of political brothers, having but one
feeling, one principle, and that democratic.
The mere mention of party horrifies them,
the' speak of an attempt to set up the land-
marks in this State, which exist in every
other in the Union, as a vile endeavor to sow
dissension. Should the Democrats be coaxed
or fooled into a belief of these deceptive pro-
testations, and continue to trust blindly to
I numbers, they will haye much time to repent,
the fatal cousequences of their error, before
they can recover their lost ground. A bare
mention of two facts ought to convince us,
how much sincerity there is in these Whig
asseverations ; in the face of them, they had
the effrontery to push fonvard'pne of their old
haranguers as a candidate for Congress.
Who true to his party, sunlc all party conside-
rations, and pledged himself to support Mr,
Polk's administration, from motives of grati-
tude! for the consummation of annexation.
A believer in the Koran, hut a follower of
Christ. However, thes&fino things were only
" for the nonce," only to accomplish one
end, to have one Representative in Congress
from Texas ; this effoctkl, the ties of gratitude,
would he no Gnrdian Itnot, the promised sup-
port of Mr. Polk woJid have proved as illu-
sive as the mirage ofyhe desert, and melted
like an icicle, beforethe Blue light of Fed-
eralism. Nor is this all, the Whigs, of Harri-
son county, have formed a Whig Club ; and
will march to the poles as a phalanx j their
movements will hare the force of concert and
unity ; whilst the Democrats are weakened
by disunion.
How long are matters to remain thus 1
Will the Democrats continue to support men
of whose political tenets they know nothing,
except so much as,they may be pleased to tell
of themselves 1 As they value their principles
and arc anxious to promote the continuance
of their party iu power, it is to be hoped not.
The organization must commence at some
point; for u beginning, we would respectfully
suggest to the Democrats of Travis county
Ihe propriety of holding a meeting at the Cap-
itol in the city of Austin, on Saturday the25th
day of April, liaving for its object the forma-
tion of a Democratic Club.

Duelling and Honor. We do not re-
member ever to have read a more pithy
and appropriate remark than the following
contained (n a speech of Mr Kennedy of
Indiana, on the Oregon notice : "There
has been a comparison here between the
honor of an individual, who gots out to
fight his fellow man in private1 life, and
the honor of a nation engaged in a war.
But what is it that justifies war? The
vindication ofour rights. But what is the
motive of duel? The obtaining a little
poor, carnal revenge. I live in a country
where ice never fight duels or yield up
rights "
The Female Eye. John Smith says
that the female eye has the following vari-
ety of expression : The glare, the stare,
the leer, the sneer, the invitation, the defi
ance, the denial, the consent, the look of
love, the flash of rage, the sparkling of
hope, the langtiishraent of softness, the
squint of suspicion, the fire of jealousy and
Hnstre of approbation and pleasure. He

You will be guided in making your returns
of receipts and disbursements, by the laws and
instructions of the late Government. Should
any change be made hy the Legislature now

In the course of a short time, an agent will

It is the desire of this Office tn'setlle up the
fi cal aft'.urs (o far as they have been assigned

different officers-will render every aid in their
power in the accomplishment of that object.
I will here remark, that if after the lapse ol
a reasonable time, the funds collected nnd the
needful returns as required by. law, be not re-
reived, it will become my duty to cause legal
process to be instituted against all delinquents.
I trut, however, that uch a course will not be
found necessary, and that all will come for-
ward nnd close their accounts, in conformity
with their official engagement?.
