very offensive.
We object to these posters because of
their immodesty. Some of them are
markedly indecent. It is not merely be-
cause people of both sexes are pictured
in tights that wo object to them, for
thejo need not be any impropriety in
appearing upon, the stage in decent
tights or in giving pictures of those
who thus appear. It is because of their
essential viciousness.
We object to the public display of the
vicious pictures because it is repulsive
to pure minded women, young and old,
wedded and unwedded, as well as to
their fathers and brothers. There is
proof of this in the protests that are
made against them.
We object to it because it is unlawful
under the statutes of the state of New
York. The law in the case ought to bo
and can very easily be enforced without
the least infringement of the rights of
anybody.
We object to the bad posters for artis-
tio reasons. The colored pictures which
they bear are nearly always uncomely,
and tho persons represented in them of-
ten .look like slouchos, though in tights.
Let tho law be applied to these soan-

The Thinly Veiled prophecy of a Corre-
spondent Based on Socialistic Agitation.
The prospect grows stronger of seri-
ous manifestations of socialism in
French politics during this month, says
tho London correspondent of the New
York Sun. The socialist victory in the
election to fill the vacancy caused by
Casimir Perier's elevation to the presi-
dency has filled the pany with enthusi-
asm, and they no longer conceal their
intention to overthrow the president by
means of a coalition with his opponents
in the chamber, if possible. It is repeat-
edly asserted that the president will not
much longer retain Dupuy at the head
of the cabinet, but the rumors of a cabi-
net crisis appear to be premature. The
Paris correspondent of the London
Times evei^ ventures a thinly veiled
prophecy of revolution. He has jus
written:
"Neither Casimir Perier nbr anybody
else can do anything against socialism.
When the bourgeoisie perceive that the
so^alists are agreed on devouring them,
differing only as to the sauoe with
which they are ^ be served up, they
will recommence the game which .has
been going on for a century. They Will
fling themselves into the arms of a de-
liverer, stipulating not for liberty or
equality, or anything of that sort, but
simply for riddance from the nightmare
of socialism. They will acclaim the man
who allows them to go quietly to sleep
and to wake without uneasiness; hence
pretenders, impatient or otherwise, may
be advised to say not that they lovo lib-
erty, but that they love force; not fra-
ternity,"but authority; nonqualify, but
obedience."

opposition to tho government was so

and the count sent 420 trout Then he
received a dispatch saying that his name
