Optical Suggestions.
Never sleep opposite & window
which will throw & flood of strong
light on the eyes when you wake
in the morning.
When bathiDg the face do not
open the eyes under water, as this
is apt to be injurious to the epith-
elial covering of the eye.
Shades on lamp or gas burners
should be of "milk" oi ground
glass" never of colored glpss.
The short-sighted eye is
essentially a diseased eye' and
should be treated as such. It affects
by preference those who use their
eyes constantly for fino or seat
work, and is almost unknown
among uncivilised nations.
In all institutions, particularly
tor children, where the eyes are
retiuired to do close word, the pro-
portion of the square surface of the
windows 10 the square surface of j
the floor should never fall below,
one to four.
\V hen children work by* light,
which fall in their faces they
apt to bend the body forward
to shade the eyes by the head
else to twist it around so that the
light shall fall on the pax;e. Both
of these positions are pernicious;
there is great danger of the chest
becoming narrow and contracted
and of the spine becoming curved.

Other Southern states will no doubt
follow the example.
Every one who remembers the in.
famous rule of E. -J. Davis iu Texas
can appreciate Gov. Ross' action in
hesitating to declare martial law in
Fort Bend county, but iu our opin-
ion that is, under the circumstances,
about the only solution of the
trouble offered.
The condition of affairs in Rich-
mond and Fort Bend county comes
as near approaching anarchy as well
may be imagined, and to reach a so-
lution of the troubles and restore
order wdl prove a difficult problem
It is a most unfortunate state of af-
fairs.
Some of the Northern newspaper
correspondents spent their summer
vacation at the watering resorts in
writting up glowing descriptions of
beauty in the bath. Mr3. Belknap,
the charming brunette wife of ex-
fortune to support an army of a le-
gion did not deserve the title of a
rich man. Appicns expended $1,-
500,000 in debauchery, and when he
found that he had only $200,000 left
he powoned himself .because he did
"not consider that sum sufficient for
his maintenance. One single dish
cost Eeopus $400,000. Caligula
spent for one supper $100,000, and
HeliogaLulus $100,000 The usual
cost of a repast for Lucullus was
$100,000. aud the fish from his
ponds were sold for $175,000. The
enormous wealth and the extrava-
gant and riotous manner in which
these anciant worthies spent their
substance ia suggestive of the enor-
mous wealth and the mode of living
of some of the latter day nabobs in
this country who live off the people.
Instead of purchasing the friend-
ship of individuals to secure their
political influence, as Caesar did,
they levy enormous contributions
during election times to purchase
votes in blocks of five, in order to
perpetuate the tariff robbery. They
also spend their wealth in big sup-
pers and in other extravagant ways.
We saw it stated the other day that
one wealthy monopolist had en-
gaged an artist to paint a picture of
hi3 favorite dog at the cost of a
thousand dollars.
To Stop a Runaway Horse.
The Russian method forstoppin
a runaway horse is said to be very jyour interest to call on
effective, and is not particularly
cruel. They place a cord with a
running knob around the horse's
neck near the neck strap. To this
slip noose attach a pair of reins,
which may be thrown over the
dashboard ready to be seized at
once. When the horse starts take
up the exta reins, and tighten the
cord around the horse, threat. The
most furious horse thus -choked
stops instantly, and will not kick
or fall.—True Flag.
