There is a conslfnt Iresh actrs-
sion ot labor and land to the pro-
ducing capacity of each year's
planting, but there is an obstinate
reduction in yield in proportion
both to tbo land employed and also
to the labor. Tttis is readily
demonstrated for corn, wheat, hay
and cotton, hoth. tor the averages
of comparative period of three
yours and fiveycars. The explana-
tion of this unpleasant pheno-
menon, which means a comparative
waste both ot capital and labor, is
to bo found largely in the distress-
ing diminution of tho profits on
former cultivation, whiih gives
rise to the tonoral effort to moke
I up, Ui for the deficiency in
price. If for instance, il requires
one hundred bushels of wheat or
ten bales of cotton to bring the far-
mer as much as sixty-bushels of
wheat or six bal*fc of cotton tyr
merly yielded, he strives to keep
uphis income by employ rng the ad-
ditional land and labor. He is
driven to over cropping, which in-
creases hit expense while reducing
his rate of production. It is a con-
sequence that both ot these factors
of cultivation necessarily suffor—
the land by over-cropping and the
lack ot tho needful fertilisation,
and the labor by reason of the fact
that an aggregate wage fund,
especially if the nggregate be re-
duced, as it has been, the rate that
can be paid to the hand is neces-
sarily lowered.. The general con-
soquouccs are, therefore, that land
and farm labor are being impover-
ished together; that farming capi-
tal is being seriously contracted,
and that wo aro suffering from a
gradual delay "in far the most im-
portant department in the nation's
subsistence and wealth.-— Rx.
The vegetable garden should not
be without flowers. In the neglect-
ed corners may be often grown
enough of flowers to brighten the
household and make cheerful the
fablo, morning ooon and night.
And wo are well satisfied that
flowers should never be looked up-
on in the country as a luxury, they
should b« considered one of the
necessities of lite and should be
provided for the home as regularly
and systematically as hay is pro-
vided lor the barn. That man who
neglects to provide flowers fcr his
family In the country, is only half
man at the best; for be leaves out
of bis calculations the highest and
best elements of human nature,
having no thought for the love of
beautiful things and the fountain
of happiness these bcautifhl things
will supply in his family—New
