How Grant's Military Btand with tho
Mon Hung Cpou III* Action.
That evening tho troops began to pour
ont of ; the woods In columns. The in-
fantry soldiers marched soberly past the
artillery. There were no exultant songs
in those columns. The men seemed aged.
They wero very tirod und very hungry.
They seemed to bo greatly dopreestxl. I
sat by the roadside In front of the battery
waiting for It to move, and attentively
watched tlio infantry march past. Many
of the soldiers spoke to me, asking if there
was authentic news as to whore they wero
going.
"llero wo go," said a slab-sided Yankeo
private; '-hero wo go, marching for the
Kapidan and the protection afforded by
that river. Now, when wc get to tho
ChanccUorsvilie house, if wo turn to the
left we are whipped, at least so say Grant
and Meade. And if we tarn toward the
river you will see hell. The bounty juinp-
' ers wiU break and run, and thcro will bo
the very devil of a panic. Oh, for a gen-
eral!" he exclaimed, "oh, for a generul who
knows how to fight!"
"Suppose we turn to the right, what
then!'" I asked.
"That will moan lighting, and fighting
on the lino tlio Johnnies have selected
and intrenched. But it will indicate the
purpose of Grant to fight," he replied.
Then he told me that the news in
nis Sixth Corps brigade was that Meade
had strongly advised (1 rant to turu back
and recross tho Rupidau, und that this ad -
vico was inspired by tlio loss of Shaler's
and Seymour'3 brigades on tho evening
uf tho previous day. This was tho first
tlnio I hoard this rumor, but I heard It
fifty times before I slept that night. The
enlisted men, one and all, believed it, und
I then firmly believed tho rumor to be
authentic, and I beliovo it to-day. None
of tho onlisted men had any confidence in
Meade as a tenacious, aggressive lighter.
Grant's military standing with tho on-
listed men this day hung on tho direction
wo turned at the Chancellorsvillo house.
If to the left, ho was to be rated with
Meade and Ilookor and Burnside and
Pope. At tho Chancellorsvillo house we
turned to tho right. Instantly all of us
heard a elgh Of relief. Our spirits rose,
We marchod freo. Tho men began to
sing. Tho enlisted mon understood the
Hanking movement. That uight we wore
happy. Thore was much interchange of
opinion between the artillerymen and the
Infantry. We gathered from the losses
these mon enumerated in their own com-
mands that the three days' lighting had
cost Grant about 25,000 meu, or a little
moro than one-fifth of the army. And tho
enlisted men—the volunteers who had
brains in their skulls—always stuok to it
that those figures correctly represented
the losses of Union soldiers in the bloody
Wilderness battle. Frank Wllkesou in

An Expert's Opinion of Exciso.
Tako the heart—itself a vory bundle of
muscular fibers. We know that as long
as we live, whether sleeping or waking,
that wonderful organ keeps up its rogular
contractions and expansions. But, whon
we use our muscles, their contractile foroe
upon tho blooil-vessels helps the blood
along Us channels, and thus takes a little
labor from the propelling heart. It beats
faster but with loss effort. While helping
tho heart, muscular cxerclso helps tho
lungs also. More exercise means for the
lungs more breath; that Is, moro air in-
spired and more carbonic-acid gas ex-
pired. By deeper breathings the involun-
tary muscles are strengthened.
While the lungs and hea^t are doing
better work under the stimulus of mus-
cular exerclso, the heart pumping the
blood inoro certainly to the farthermost
tissno of tho body and the lungs more rap-
Idly purifying the blood, other organs are
benefited. The diaphragm, that muscle
separating the lungs and heart from tho
stomach and liver, is rising and falling,
and, with tho increased expansion and
contraction of tho walls of the thorax, is
moving nil the contents of the abdomen
to activity. The liver, the groat gland of
tho body, has not only more bluod sent
to it, but is (quickened to action.
Tlio Founder of Cleveland, Ohio.
Tho Clevolands wore a moro than or-
dinarilly ablo rnco. Two of thoir number
—both of whom spelled their name' with
the "a" so common in tho older genera-
tions—were noted lu their day ; the one as
the founder of Ohio's second city, and the
other as tho able, if not eccentric, pro-
fessor of chemistry In Bowdoln college. He
was ono of the ablcBt natural philosophers
of a generation or two back; an Intrepid
experimenter, yet childishly timid in other
respects. To the day of his death he ia^
said never to have ridden in a railroad
car, and when a thunderstorm came on
seated himself on a glass-legged stool in
his collar.—Cincinnati Commercial Ga-

What Parents Fear.
Many persons—especially parents—objeet
to many quack nostrums as likely to engen-

They uro right. Better die of disease timn of

docs not involve this danger. It not only
builds up the system, curing all ailments of
the stomach, liver and kidneys, but it stimu-

cures the appetite for liquor.

Dandruff is dirty and disagreeable in every
way. It soils the clothing continually, auli
is accompanied by a hardly less annoying
sensation ot itching. Tho scalp is diseased!
Thcro is nothing in thp world so thoroughly
adapted to this trouble as Parker's llafr
Balsam. It cleanses and heals the scalp,,
stops the falling hair, and restores its original
soltness, gloss and color. Is not oily, highly
perfumed, is an clegs lit dressing. Very eco-

tion keeps the hair in perfect condition.
