H*re are Some remarkable 01
that have again started the
of the press for the 15th time and
even if they have got whiskers as
the wind blows through tt*e®, we
think we can sera smile provoked.
The other day a wagon maker who
had been dumb for years picked up
a hub and spoke, and a blind car-
penter reached out for his plane and
saw, and a deaf sheep ranchman
went out with his dog and herd, and
a noseless fisherman caught a barrel
of herring and smelt, and a forty-
ton elephaut inserted his trunk into
a grate and flue.
t It ie to be hoped that the negotia-
tions with Germany to obtain a sus-
pension of the order prohibiting the
importation of American meat will
be successful, although from recent
figures it is evident that the trade
does uot cut such a large figure in
the commerce of the United States
as has been commonly supposed.
No mutter how small the market is,
however, we need it, and the evi*
dently unjust stigma on the Ameri-
can product should be removed in
the interest of our trade with other
countries.

The condition of the money mar

emplified by the published advertise-

quests its depositors to withdraw
deposits, as the bank has money to

rowers. The depositors of that bank
should investigate Texas invest-

Senator Hill struck a key note
when he said: "When six men are
looking for work from one boss
wages are low: but when six bosses
are looking for one workman wages
are high." The law of supply and
demand governs the price of labor
as it does that of pork and putty.

THE HAPPY CROWS.
They Are as Cunning as They Are Con-
tented—Crow Conventions.
After the duties of incubation are
passed the crows lead an industrious
and happy life with their young,
teaching the brood how to find food
for themselves and to avoid the dan-
gers they are liable to encounter
from the manifold traps set by the
careful farmer or the hunter with
his gun on his shoulder. It's said
this sagacious bird smells powder.
His sharpness and cunning fci avoid-
ance of it would make one a&nost be-
lieve so. Tho young are taught early
to steer clear of all men with sticks
in hand roaming at large through
the woods, while tho loud, urgent
"Caw, caw, caw," the old crow's
danger signal, is familiar to every-
body. As the evenings become cool
the parent birds, with their charges,
now as large as themselves, join
with others of their sort until all the
crows that inhabit a radius of 20
miles or so are banded together. For
a month more they pick up their
living as ono largo family, seen
everywhere in flocks.

have waited for, as the morning aft-
er the ground shows white these
sable marauders choose an open spot
Generally, if near tide water, a
marsh is preferred. Throwing out
two or more sentinels, like the good
generals they are, they begin a regu-
lar conference meeting. Tho ground
from 20 to 200 feet, according to tho
size of the flock, is black with them.
An irregular ring is formed, and a
speaker or rather several speakers
hold forth, much to the edification
of the rest.
The assembly is thoroughly noisy,
and their loud cawing at such times
is audible half a milo away. The
gathering is continued generally, if
not disturbed, at tho same place for
several days, gaining in intensity,
liko a protracted camp meeting of
the Methodists, though they real-
ized the impomftcew ootnfrtg t>on
speedy decision. Fresently the in-
terested countryman or naturalist,
who has been a silent observer at a
distance of this bird powwow, wakes
up some morning to find a thin film
of ice has formed in wet places over
tho landscape. He then glances
down to the distant meadow o
marsh just to see how the crows like
it. To his surprise, there is none
there. Their meeting ground is va
cant, and not so much as a feather
