l Letter to the Courier-Journal.
^ {arris, of the Atlanta
Constitution, is a plain, blunt
man. He is to all appearances
a tomato-catsup blonde—that
is the only way I have of classi-
fying him—and looks like his
face had been shotted with Wor-
cester sauce. He has red hair,
a short, stubby mustache and
imperial of the same complex-
ion, and a not lofty brow, but
ene bulging with bumps of wit
and humor. His shape is short
and stout, with a tendency to
stubbiness, and altogether he is
nut unlike a "Frenchman from
Cork." He is slow of speech
and wholly devoid of any man-
nerism or ostentation. Mr.
Harris is a young man, slightly
the rise of thirty, and, like his
friend Small, is twined for life
with little pomegranates on his
vine. He has published his
Uncle Remus and old folks'
lore in bt.ok form. The first
edition was issued last Novem-
ber, and has reached a sale al-
ready of over 20,000 copies.
He is continuing the same
strain of stories in Scribner.
Nineteen of them will complete
the series. I asked him if these
stories were fragments of his im-
agination, and he replied:
"No; they are negro legends,
in my own dressing, which have
been handed down from gener-
ation to generation. These
same stories have their counter-
part among the tribes of South
America, the Creek and Crow
Indians, and other parts of
Asia. These different people
vary them according to the ani-
mals with which they are best
acquainted. The origin of these
legend* is unknown* but seems
to ante-date history.". Mr. Har-
ris has done a good work in
collecting, smoothing and set-
ting these rough diamonds into
our literature. The "project"
promises to run handsomely
from a financial standpoint, and
here's 'oping that it may, Brer
Remus.

A Wine Deacon.
"Deacon Wilder, I want you
to tell me how you kept your-
self and family well the past
season, when all the rest of us
have been sick so much, and
have had the doctors visiting us
so often?"
"Brother Taylor, the answer
is very easy. I used Hop Bit-
ters in time, kept my family
well and Saved the doctor bills.
Three dollars' worth of it kept
us well and able to work all the
time, I'll warrant it has cost
you and the neighbors one to
two hundred dollars a piece to
keep sick the same time."
"Deacon I'll use your medi-
cine hereafter."
The Pleasure* of Youth,
James G. Fair is worth $42-
000,000. And the whole #42,-
000,000 of it, my dear boy,
can't make him as happy as you
are with the dew of youth in your
heart when you hold the hand
of the girl you love, and walk
with her in a path that is only
wide enough for one, with the
rustling branches whispering
above your head, so happy you
cannot speak with anything but
your eyes. If you envy him,
Teleinancus; if you, with your
brown hands and bright face,
with the down just shading your
lip, and not a gray hair in your
head or a gnawing care in your
heart, with the morning sun
shining on your upturned face,
with the velvet turf under your
feet and the blue heavens above
your head, with the blood
coursing through your veins
like wine, with fifty or sixty
years of life before you, with
mirage after mirage of bright
dreamt and beautiful illusions
and pleasant vanities making
the landscape beautiful about
you; ifyoii envy this man his
£42/000,000 and his gray hairs
and his wrinkles, you are a fcol
my boy; and you scatter ashes
on the roses that grow in the
morning. There is lightness in
your step, my son, and color in
your blood, and dreams in yuur
heart, and ill the love and beau
ty ind freshness ot the sun-
shine the 142,000,000 cannot
buy, and don't you forget it
