Col. Wash Jones arrived on
the Central tram Monday at
11:30 a. m. and was received by
Mr. Thomas Dwyer and the
Brenham Cornet band, and in a
hack accompanied by the band
was taken to Mr. I)'s residence.
About 2 o'clock the band was
again called into requisition
and Col. Jones accompanied by
Mr. Dwyer, was escorted to
our palatial courthouse, where
an audience of between 250
and 500 persons, about equally
divided between white and
black, had assembled to hear
him. Mr. Carl Schutze intro-
duced Col. Jones to the audi-
ence. The colonel spoke for
nearly three hours making a
speech that was entirely too
long to give even a synop-
sis of. He made an
elaborate defense of his acts
and votes in congress, critici-
zing the democratic members
with the greatest versatility and
Irecdom. Ilis abuse was con-
fined solely to the democratic
party, he not saying a single
word against the republicans or
greenbackers. He had a good
deal to say about free schools
and the enforcement ol the
criminal law. He also stated
that the two old parties had
outlived their day of usefulness,
yet he was all the time bidding
for republican votes. It was the
general subject ol remark that
during his entire address his
face was turned toward the col-
ored portion ol the audience,
and his main object seemed to
be to "captivate" them. Col.
Jones felt very sore all over his
body where the Galveston News
had sat down upon him last
Sunday morning; he accused
the News with having reported
him falsely and with willful
misrepresentation. He also ac-
cused the newspapers generally
of jumping at conclusions and
criticising the acts of officials
without knowing anything
about the facts in the case. The
colonel will come in for a full
share of newspaper criticism
before the canvass is over. He-
said that he did not want to go
to congress any more and then
charged the legislature with
having gerrymandered the dis-
trict. He proved himself to be a
thorough - going full-Hedged,
able-bodied demagogue.

Curious Cask.—Sunday
morning about 11 o clock,
Thomas McMahan, a railroad
laborer drunk and unable was
arrested by Moses Bainc, depu-
ty sheriff or by W. P. Doran
marshal, both arrived at the
bastile at the same time. Mc-
Mahan had about $10 in silver.
Doran wanted to put him in the
bastile and take charge of the
money. Battle claimed that the
prisoner was his and that lie,
Baine, would take charge of the
money. Doran then declined
to have anything to do with the
prisoner and told Baine lie
could take him to the county
jail, which he did ; at the jail
they refused to receive the pris-
oner who was turned loose
Mr. McMahan found himself in
a wagon yard Monday morning
and had $2 50 111 his pocket,
which was very lucky consider
ing that he had camped out.
M wok's Court.—Monday—
Geo. Pott, white, drunk and
disorderly. Plead guilty and
paid 11 and the trimmings.
Bill Nolris, colored, whipping
his wife at Watrousville on Sat-
urday night. Bill stood the
Watrousville police off, and on
Sunday morning was grabbed
up by the marshal and put in
the bastile. lie plead guilty
and was fined $ 10 and costs.
Bills friends will find him tn the
bastile—-unless he breaks out.
Jusucks Court,— Monday
-Gus Derke, disturbing the
peace by hitting a negro over
the head with a rh nr. The
charge wa; assault and battery,
tried by the court, guilty, fined
and the trimmings,

and the Texas and St. Louis
railroads, McGregor being the j
junction. It is situated in a
fine fanning section and will
make an important shipping
point. Excursion rates will be
given those attending the sale.
Joe Hoffman—In the Ban-
nek's report of the proceedings
of the republican county con-
vention the name of Mr. Joe.
Hoffman, nominee lor county
assessor, was unintentionally
omitted. He is now serving his
second term, and, as lar as we
know, has discharged his duties
faithfully and impartially.
Wash Jones has evidently
got himself into business. In
his opening speech at Galves-
ton lie took occasion to pitch
into the newspapers, and now
the newspapers will pitch into
him. The Galveston News of
Sunday sets down on him with
a weight like a blow from a ten-
ton tripdiammer. Jones will
now have a good deal olex-
plaining to do.
