Under the lieading above given
the "Texas Republic" in one of
its reeent issues gives Mr. A. P.
Barrett a few nuts to craek. The
article, we are-sorry to say, is too
long to be reprinted in its entiretv.
but at the same time too interest-
ing to be ignored.
"Mr. A .P. Barrett", says the
"Texas Republic", a very affable
young gent-leman, who has hereto-
l'ore 011 two differeilt oeeasions
been repudiated among his
neighbors as eongressional timber,
lias cliallenged the right of Mr.
Slayden to re-election to Congress
upon the ground that Mr. Slay-
den is disloyal to his country in
this war.
Tlie right of Mr. Barrett to
succeecl Mr. Slayden depends es-
sentially for its foundation upon
the charge that Mr. Slayden is
disloyal and that through Mr.
Barrett's veins, alone, throbs
blood which glows with loyalty
and patriotism. Mr. Barrett, so
he says, is inaking the race solely
in response to this; he does not
want the otTiee for the honor or
the prosit; to aecept it, means to
him the supreme sacritiee of a Pa-
triot.
No man, particularly at this
time, eould plaee at the feet of
any American a more serious or
infamous charge than Mr. Bar
rett has plaeed at the feet of Mr.
Slayden. No e 11 e 111 y blood
Courses through the veins of Mr.
Slayden. Ile is purely American
stock. Ile has been honored and
trusted with a voiee in the eoun-1
eils of the American Government
by the American people. Ile owes
his all, as he now rapidly ap-
proaches the allotted three-score-
and-ten years of life, to the bene-
ficient protection of the Ameri-
can Klag. And j if the charge
which Mr. Barrett has made can
he supported by credible evi-
dence, Mr. Slayden should suffer
the extreme penalty to be inflict-
ed upon the ignoble traitor.
Upon the other band, if the
charge which Mr. Barrett has
made can not, be , supported by
credible evidence, he (Mr. Bar-
rett) should suffer the extreme
penalty to be inflicted upon the
defamer, the slanderer and char-
acter-assassin — the supreme con-
tempt of a decent and outraged
people.
The interest of The Republic
in this matter is not political. It
is purely one of standing for fair
play and a square deal . If Mr.
Slayden be disloyal, he should
suffer as a disloyalist of basest
type. If Mr. Barett is seeking
to advance his personal interest
upon an unsupported charge of
disloyalty against Mr. Slayden,
then Mr. Barrett should suffer as
n «1 Müderer of the basest type.
The Republic l'as known Mr.
Slayden for many years. It is
not now, and has never been, tlie
political supporter of Mr. Slay-
den. But he has been a man of
honor and The Republic has never
suspicioned that Jas. L. Slayden
is of tlie stuff disloyalty is made
of."
'After going in'to detail of the
eh arges made by this man Bar-
rett the "Texas Republic" eon-
•ludes its article as follows:
"Mr. Barrett, if Mr. Slayden is
lisloval, and you have the evi-
denee to establish it, and you are
-nveloped in the fires of patrio-
tism, as you now declaim, do you
110t beleive that i\Ir. Slayden
should be proseented under the
law as every disloyalist, should
be? If not, why not? If so, why
do you not submit your proof to
l;!i. I'nited States Department of
Justice, swear to a complaint,
and set in motion the machinery
of the Government in his prose-
t-u1 ion ?
Mr. Barrett, you are a lawyer.
You know the law — or are sup
jioscd to kr.o'w the law — and the
• !-li-it'-o e.v-;"ntial upon wliich to
und suppbrt a charge of
lovall.v. ils von have snfficient
You have made the issue. It
is high time that you were ini-
tiating a criminal prosecution or
that you were preparing to ae-
cept the opprobrium which you
will deserve, and which you will
reeeive, if you are inaking such
charges for your own political
aggrandizement, to have an in-
nocent and loyal American pol i
tically sentenced to doom and
dishönor 011 a criminal acusa-
tion without evidence of crimin-
ality.
