The reasons for desiring to commemorate the Schmidt-Gold-Hoegemeyer house with a Texas Historical Commission marker are: (1) the stone home was built about 112 years ago so solidly that it is still in excellent condition today; (2) it is an example of the Fredericksburg stone homes of the 1860's beautifully built by the immigrants from Germany' (3) it will preserve for posterity the characteristics of the architecture common to the 1860's: front porch with railing and ginger- bread trim, thick 18-inch stone walls, glass-transomed front door, fireplace, outbuildings (smokehouse, washhouse, well house); and (4) it was built by a man (Lorenz Schmidt) who came in 1846 with the first German immigrants and their leader, John 0. Meusebach, to found the town of Fredericksburg and who helped build the original community center (Vereins-Kirche) and built many, if not most, of the early stone homes in Fredericksburg.
