CMrafM Re-Write M*il of AIimw-
UfT%ine Soldier*
(By Henry Wood, United Prm Staff
Correspondent.)
With tbe French Armlee, Nov. 1
(by mall).—Oerraany'g domination
of the inhabitant* of Alsace-Lor-
raine has now become so uncertain
that they are no longer allowed to
'receive letters from the male mem-
bers of the families serving on the
various German fronts. Tills curi-
ous state of affairs has Just been dis-
covered by the flnilln* of orders es-
tablishing the new system of gov-
ernment letter transmission for the
two provinces.
Germany's precautions are pre-
sumably dictated by fear tbat the
soldiers In her armies from Alsace
and Lorraine, might conrmunlcato
to their families military or other
useful information, and that this In
turn might be communicated by the
Inhabitants of the two provinces to
the French acrosH the border.
All letter* from German soldiers
of Alsatian or Lorraine origin must
now pass throng!) a newly-created
office at .Stuttgartli. These govern
merit employees make extracts of
the letters, and It Is these extracts
that the families of the soldiers in
Alsace-Lorraine eventually receive.
Tbe entire system Is self-explained
In the following "extract" that has
just come Iuto tbe hands of the'
French military authorities:

health as 1 am, but recently I have
only heard from you rarely, al-
though I write you every two weeks.

for a long time to come. Potatoes
and fruits are botb in most unusual

quantities of both, but naturally not
to the point where It makes me sick
as do others here who verily eat
