Louisville Courit r-,Journal.
President Wilson is declared to have said
that William Jennings Bryan as secretary ol
state weakened the position of the United
States, and that it was months after the res-
ignation of Secretary Bryan before the Unit-
ed States could convince Germany that it was
in earnest about its championship of the rights
of neutrals at sea.
When the que.-tion of what should be done
lor Bryan was up the Courier-Journal sug-
gested that he be sent to some foreign post
| that would tickle his vanity, and kept out of
the cabinet where he might do harm and could
do no good, lie was put m the cabinet, and
lie did as much harm as one man could do.
The state department under Uryan wa•
known as a litrce. It is not surprising to hear,
or hard to believe, that President Wilson had
realized for some time that tile department was
not only inept, but, actually damaging to the
intere.-ts as well as the dignity of the United
States.
The president's -experience in placing a
showman and politician in an important .posi-
tion for which he wa not qualified by temper-
ament, i- .pt ricnce or mental equipment should
be a la ling warning to future presidents.
The one -.inking constructive act of Mr.
Uryan a secretary of stale was his resigna-
tion, which wa.. for the good of the -ervice.
He should not have been intrusted with the
dillicult and delicate duties of an ollice always
important and a!way potentially of supreme
importance.
Hogberry upon > <reme bench could
not have been m ,i ii ighly out of his ele-
ment than Urva- t ary of state was out
of his depth.
