The Bartlett Good Roads
League met Tuesday evening and
among the business transacted
was the election of officers for

Elgin, Tex., Dec, 20. the
most destructive fire in Elgin for
many months occurred early Mon-
day morning when the home and
entire contents belonging to J as.
Fi.-her were completely de-
stroyed. ,The origin of the fire
is unknown, and-1 the accumula-
tion of thirty-five years in fur-
nishings were a total loss as the
property was not insured.
Bought Restaurant
During the week, Mr. E. E.
Gilliam purchased the Clark
Street Cafe from Mr. Fred
Chaudion, and will conduct the
business in the same building,
Mr. Dug McKenzip will have
charge of the business, and will
keep everything up to the stand-
ard as did the former proprietor.

COTTON GINNED
The Tribune is just in receipt
of a report ot Williamson County
cotton ginnings from Wm. T.
Armstrong, reporter for the U.
S. Census,. Bureau,,. Department,
of Commerce. The report shows
that thenun)ber'ofsbales ginned
inthis"county has come up t6 the
figures estimated at the first of
the season by the most optimis-
tic. Prior j to Dec. 1, there had been
109,705 bales of cotton from this
season's crop. This compares
with 72,923 ginned prior to the
same date of the year 1915. The
increase over last year is approx-
imately 51 per cent, and this
year's crop, with some more cot-
ton yet to bo ginned, promises
to compare favorably with the
best crops that have been raised
in Williamson county.
COTTON GINNED IN
JELL COUNTY
According to figures of the U.
S. Department of Commerce,
furnished us today by Special
Agent A. J. Embree. the Bell
county cotton crop was larger

The report says: "There were
65,S1'3 bales of cotton, counting
round as half bales, ginned in
Bell county from the crop of 191G
prior to Dec. 1, 1916, as compar-
ed with 40,411 bales glnaed to
Dec. 1, 1915." Belton News.
Night-Riders Warn HasKeli
Farmers
Fort Worth, Texas, Dec. 14-
Night riders have appeared in
West Texas warning landlords to
dismiss their negro tennants and
negro cotton pickers: A printed
warning to this effect was left
under the door of every business
house in Haskell Tuesday night,
according to advices here today.
The warning was signed "White
Renter's League." Many ne-
groes were taken into West Tex-
as this fall to gather the large
cotton crop and the printed warn-
ing from the mysterious league
states it is feared these negroes
will be allowed to remain.

Fires at Leander
Leandcr, Tex., Dec. 19 Sat-
urday about 4 p. m. the residence
of F. M Ragland, a merchant of
this place, was burned. Thd

were savf d by the quick work of
the neighbors. It is not known
how the. firetetartpd. There was
no insurance on either the build-
ing or the contents. About 4
o'clock Sunday morning the resi-
dence of J. M. Hall, living a few
miles west of this place, and
some hay stacks, were burned.
Nothing was saved. The fire is
supposed to have been of incen-
diary origin, and bloodhounds
from Austin have been brought
for the purpose of trailing the
firebug. No insurance was car-

There will be all-day services
next Sunday at the Alligator
Church. Preaching at 11:00 a.
m. and in the afternoon. Dinner
on the grounds. The sermons
will be appropriate to the occa-

Cold Hurts Small Grain
Bertram, Tex. Dec. 19. -The last
three changes of the weather
have been cold, dry northers,
and as a result small grain is
suffering very much and will
hardly stand another spell of 18
degrees above zero. Farm work
is further advanced than for
many years at this period. Some
little complaint that some land is
getting too dry to plow. Rain is
needed very much.
Belton District Court
Belton, Dec. 20. The jurors
for the week in the district court
not accepted in the Dickey-Mc-Neeley
case were excused today.
This will be the last case heard
in the December term.
It is expected that all work of
the term will be completed Sat-
urday. The January term opens Jan
uary 1, 1917. This will be a three
months' term.
