After sbveral years of work and
worry and enormous expense a
genuine gusher has been devel-
oped in the Hnmble fiejd, 20 miles
from Houston. Rejoicing is the
oider of the day, menwalk the

Spindle Top and organize a mil
lion, companies with billions of
dollars of capital (on paper) as
they did at Beaumont, bufit is a
grand thing for Houston and for
glorious Texas. It is rather to
be regretted that this gusher did
not gush just before Thanksgiv-
ing day. The speakers who so
glorified tha material wealth of
the state on that occasion would
have flown awav on the wings of
imagination and brought a crown
for their state from the the courts
of Heaven. The geologisto say
that the oil field or fields extend'
all along the gulf coast to the'
Rio Grande and probably into
Mexico, so that there is no prob-
ability of a scarcity of oil in Tex-
as, during the life of any of her
present inhabitants. It is' pleas-
ant to see what Nature has done
for her people.
The Prairie Dell correspondent
of the Belton Journal gives out
the following bible figures, which
are worthy of note: "The Bible
contains: 3,656,480 letters, 773,-
476 words, 31,173 verses, 1,180
chapters, 60 bookB. The" word,
and" occurs 46,277 times, the
word, "Lord" occurs 1,855 times
the word, "reverond" occurs but
once, which is tho 0th verse of
the 111th Psalm. The 21st verse
of the 7th chapter of Ezra con-
tains all the letters of the alpha-
bet except the letter "J." Tho
19th chapter of II Kings and the
37th chapter of Isaiah are just
alike, word for word."

Oh, For More Monkeys.
Templo Tribune
The editor today beoame pos-
sessed of a little artiole that is
hiptily prized, through the gen-
erosity of Capt. "Wilcox, who se-
cured the objqot in Colorado. It
is! a Japanese household God, for
want of a better term, and the
form of it is three monkeys. The
first monkey, holds both hands to
his mouth, the second monkey
SoTdThis hands1 Tn front" of His
eyes and the third uses his hands
to cover his ears. The interpre-
tation is self-evident the brid-
ling of tongue, sight and hearing,
and to the Japs it bears this ad-
monition: "Speak no evil, see
no evil, hear no evil of your fellow-man."
It is said that irt ev-
ery Japanese household the three
monkeys have a prominent place,
and that the children are reared
in respect to their teaohing.
Whenever conversation drifts in-
to, the discuspion of others, tho
monkeys are pointed to, to re-
mind of the preoept, and as a
consequence, the Japs live in
greatest harmony, one with an-
other, and soandal or. ill thoughts
have no place in their homes. A
newspaper offioe is a good place
for the monkeys to be, and if all
homes had them, there would be
something better we believe.

Wo saw a man the other day
disputing with his wash woman
about a-difference of 10 cents in
the charge, and four minutes
afterwards call four men in to
join him in a drinir, for which he
cheerfully produced 50 contp.
We saw a fellow at church fish
deep down in his pookot and
bring up a nickel to put in the
contribution box, and the next
evening drop in 35 cents trying
to beat a slot maohine out of
cigars. Wo do things nearly
every day just about as incon
sistent as tnat, ana u we wore
told of it would probably sav it
was no one's business but our
own but would that make it
right?
