Good Golly,
Miss Dolly!
Port Aransas was brushed
by the outer bands of Hur-
ricane Dolly on Wednes-
day, July 23, as she made
landfall near South Padre
Island on the southern tip
of Texas.
Port Aransas emeregncy
management officials pre-
pared the city for a “wind
event,” but kept a wary eye
on the storm in the event it
became a “shutter event”
and evacaution of the is-
land was warranted.
City crews also cleaned
out drainage ditches to
minimize any obstructions
in the event of heavy flood-
ing.
The storm made surfers
happy by kicking up some
gnarly surf, the rain made a
mess of the beach but gave
it much-needed moisture,
and street flooding quickly
drained.
Winds at the height of
the strom blew at about
40 mph, with occasional
gusts to 50 mph. While the
storm did a little “pruning”
of trees, no major damage
was reported related to the
hurricane.
All of the photos on this page were shot on Wednesday, July 23, as
wind and rain from northern portions of Hurricane Dolly moved ashore
in Port Aransas. Clockwise from upper right: Two folks try to protect
their faces from stinging rain as they walk down Avenue G toward
the beach; Mike Sanchez of the City of Port Aransas Public Works
Department reaches into a manhole to remove obstructions from a
clogged drainage line during a rainstorm; seaweedsftnd debris litter
an otherwise-deserted beach after tides reached the dunes; a Port
Aransas police car heads up Avenue G, past a sign warning motorists
of flooding on the beach ahead; and a surfer faces big waves at
Horace Caldwell Pier.
