OUR GLEN WAS A MAN WHO
enjoyed life, taking the time to
share his pleasures with others.
He never met a stranger, always
finding something he shared in
common with them and always
open to learn from others, and he
applied this to his journey through
life. On the last leg of Glen’s jour-
ney to heaven, a celebration of life
was held at VFW Post 8967 on
July 19, 2008. Glen’s friends and
the community he had embraced
came together to share in the most
generous of ways. There is no a
doubt in our minds that he was
there. We would like to express
our love and gratitude to our com-
munity of friends. With your help
and Glen lighting our way, we will
continue his journey. God Bless
You and God Bless America.
Family of Glen Bearden_
THE FAMILY OF RANDY Strick-
land wishes to thank all our friends
for their expressions of sympathy,
love and respect. Randy is smiling
down on all of us and always will.
God Bless you all.

This is where I begin to show
that I’m becoming an old fart (but
not so old that I
don’t mind using
that word in this
context - if the
editor permits-
rather than using
an f with a few as-
terisks that could
be misinterpreted
for a really offen-
sive word).
I will start by
telling you of my being frightened
as a 10-year-old watching the film
of Dickens’ Great Expectations. Two
scenes did it, first when “Pip” as a
young boy encounters the convict in
a graveyard on the windswept flats
of the eerie Thames estuary: The
convict jumped out from behind a
gravestone, the music went crash
and I almost literally jumped out
of my seat. Much later in the film,
the mad Miss Haversham, jilted on
her wedding day, still adorned in
her wedding dress with the decayed
wedding feast on the table, curtains
shutting out the sunlight for 30 years,
is almost consumed by fire from an
errant candle.
Those scenes are still vivid in my
memory and served to give me a
good healthy scare, but fired up my
interest in a classic film of a classic
book that had intelligent narrative,
drama, emotion and pathos.
Fast forward 60-odd years when
the old you know who takes his visit-
ing grandchildren to the movies. The
movie was an action comic-character
film and I knew what to expect (ex-
cept I forgot my ear plugs).
What I was not quite prepared
for was the 20 minutes of “Coming
Attraction” trailers before the main
feature was shown that were an as-
sault on the senses. There must have
been half a dozen “summer block-
busters” advertized. One merged into
another and I cannot tell you the title
of any of them or the name of any
of the actors.
It was an orgy of explosions,
car wrecks, ear-damaging sounds
crashing in from all sides, killings,
maimings, bleeped out expletives
(the trailers were rated as suitable

An adult sandwich tern (right) resists the pleas of a baby that
obviously expects to be fed something by the parent._
for yiewing by all), evil people, evil
beings, zombies, tentacled horrors,
sadistic criminals, things that go
much more than bump in the night,
puerile humor, nudity, seduction,
excessive drinking, bodily functions,
lying, cheating, and all around good
fun. I was not sure when the main
feature actually began.
There were some pretty bizarre
demises in the main feature with little
time for contemplation in between as
one climax followed another in rapid
succession so I cannot imagine my
granqkids actually remembering this
film., ( will say it had its moments of
humor, but after each cataclysmic
scene! of destruction in the big city,
I wondered who was there to clean
up and care for the thousands of vic-
tims whose property was destroyed.
WtfefiTwere FEMA and the Red
Cross!
Tblame the general assault on the
senses on three events. Visually it be-
gan \fj[h the British Invasion, music
videos, and big concerts. Someone
decided that it was not enough to let
the actions of the musicians provide
the excitement of a good rock session,
but the camera must move in and out,
zoom, pan and tilt, and strobe lights
must ^dd even more freneticism to
the already jumpy music.
Then came what I call the “Advent
of Whooping.” You may not realize
it now, but people used to laugh
and cheer and clap when pleased by
some performance or other and it
was pleasant to hear. But around the
early ’60s, audiences started whoop-
ing - or maybe it’s yelping: Forced,
high pitched, jarring yells that are
most typified now by the greetings
audiences give to late night TV hosts
when they walk on stage.
That need to embellish everything
with sound and sight even stretches
to the news and such impeccable
programs as the BBC and PBS have
dumbed down.
The third event was the use of
computer graphics in advertising and
digital technology in animation and
film making. Everything now has to
flash by, change and “morph” into
ever more over-the-top fantasy.
Well, I’ve had my “rave” and
joined the legion of people in the past
who have lamented the replacing of
the familiar by something radical that
at least for a while will become the
familiar in its turn. I leave you with
a down-to-earth (er, sand) picture of
a baby sandwich tern trying to con-
vince its parent to feed it something.
The adult was saying, “You’re on
your own now, kid!”
