Burglars hit churches and
vehicles in weekend spree
Port Aransas police are looking for
the people who have broken into three
Port Aransas churches, the conces-
sion stand at the Community Park, the
Port Aransas trolley and the Flexi-B
bus - all in the last few days.
Many of the burglaries came
Saturday night, July 26, and Sunday
night, July 27, said Police Chief
Sam Russell. He said the burglaries
of the buildings may be connected,
but investigators are still working on
getting leads to the people who broke
into them.
They had more immediate success
with some unconnected burglaries of
a vehicle and a vessel.
Police Sgt. Terry Syler said a visi-
tor to Port Aransas saw a man taking
two fishing rods from a boat at a Port
Aransas motel at about 7:15 a.m. on
Saturday, July 19. The visitor foL
lowed the burglar to his vehicle anc
got a license number and a vehicle
description, which he relayed to
police.
Later that morning, police were
notified that a vehicle matching that
description was in line at the ferry
landing.
Jeffrey Buschfort, 18, of San Anto-
nio, is charged with Class B theft. The
fishing equipment was recovered
Syler said.

bicycle patrols will be on a part-time basis and assigned as the
need arises.

Police say a complaint about lack
of progress in a burglary investiga-
tion seems to have been the result
of missed communications, mis-
communications and sometimes no
communications at all.
Jeff and Patty Hart came to the
city council meeting on Thursday,
July 17, to complain about the lack
of progress in the investigation into
the burglary of their home in Port
Aransas.
The Harts live in Austin, but also
have a home here, Jeff Hart told the
council. He said they were told in
May of last year by a neighbor that
the house had been broken into,

and that they had notified police the
following day. They gave officers a
description of the vehicle the burglars
used, Hart said.
He said police later found a door
open at the house and arrested the
person they found inside.
But Hart said the case apparently
stalled at that point and nothing fur-
ther was ever done.
“It turns out one of the main
burglars was actually arrested on
unrelated charges,” Hart said. “He
was turned loose and as far as I know,
no effort was made to prosecute him.
I don’t want to interfere (with the
police case), but I do want something
done.”
“I thought it would be worth a drive
down here tonight so you could see
that the status quo at the police de-
partment isn’t working,” said Patty
Hart. “From our position, in Port
Aransas, burglary is legal.”
Not quite that legal, as it turns
out.
Police Chief Sam Russell re-
searched the case and reported to City
Manager Michael Kovacs that a man
named Joseph Powell was arrested
and charged with the burglary and
that the case was turned over to the
Nueces County District Attorney’s
Office on June 29, 2007.
“In late June (2008), Mrs. Hart
contacted the city manager along
with leaving a telephone message
for Lt. (James) Stokes,” Russell’s
memo said. “Lt. Stokes attempted to
make contact with her from late June
until right before July 4. When he at-
tempted contact over land line, he was
met with a busy signal each time. Lt.
Stokes then attempted contact with
Mrs. Hart’s cell phone; however,
the call went direct to voice mail.
Lt. Stokes states he left messages on
three occasions for Mrs. Hart to call
him. As of this date, there has been
no response.”
Russell said officers checked with
the district attorney’s office on Friday,
July 18, only to be told that office had
no record of a complaint being filed.
“I have given Lt. (Darryl) Johnson
direction to take a second copy of our
file to the appropriate Assistant D. A.
for resubmission,” Russell wrote.
“Further, he is to request grand jury
subpoenas for those individuals who
have been less than cooperative with
Detective (Mark) Stokes.”
Russell said he had contacted the
Harts to bring them up to date on the
case, and apologized for any incon-
venience caused to them.
“Mr. Hart was very satisfied with
my explanation and offered any help
that he could provide,” he wrote.
The Harts were away from home
this week and could not be reached
for comment.
