Dr. Fornell’s Newest Book
Concerns 1800 Spiritualism
Dr. EarlW. Fornell, pro-
fessor of government at
Lamar Tech, spoke to
members of Cap and Gown,
"Women's honor society,
about his new book, "The
Unhappy Medium," last
week.
"The Unhappy Medium,"
c o v ers an exciting aspect
of social history--spiritual-
ism. This volume is built
on the life of Margaret F ox
who began the age of
s p iritualism in 1848 when
she was thirteen years old.
People of the nineteenth
century were looking for a
new re 1 igion, and Mar-
garet's co mmuniqation
with dwellers of the other
world provided a perfect
avenue to pursue. Their
number grew to nearly
sixteen million, covering
entire segments of Ameri-
can society.
The cult of the spiritual-
ists exerted influence over
the entire realms of poli-
t i c s and education. The
inauguration of this
mighty seance brought
fame to the brilliant Mar-
garet Fox, the most famous

medium of the era; but
even fame yielded no hap-
piness to the Mother of
Spiritualism.
The University of Texas
Press states: "Written in
spritely prose and per-
meated with a grave
humor, this account of
nineteenth century spirit-
ualism will be equally
satisfying to the casual
reader interested in a good
story, and to the scholar
seeking serious social
history."
Dr . Fornell has studied
at Cambridge University
in England and the New
School of Social Research
at Columbia University,
receiving a BA and two
MA degrees from these
i n s t i tutions. He took his
PhD at Rice University.

Chuck says
he paid 300 bucks
less for
his Coronet
than you did
for that turtle
of yours
You really
know
how to
hurt a guy
"Chuck's a swinger," says she. "His
Coronet is quick and clean, with a lean
and hungry look. It's equipped with a
426 cubic inch mill that will mock your
turtle at the strip or on the street. He's
got four-on-the-floor, buckets, belts,
carpets, console, spinners, and a padded
dash. And he said that everything but
the four-speed stick and the 426
was standard." Then she broke his back
by asking, "Didn't you pay extra for
some of that jazz?"
Don't let the truth hurt you.
Better see the all-new, hot new Dodge
Coronet before you buy a (cuckoo),
a (cuckoo-cuckoo), or even a
(cuckoo-cuckoo-cuckoo).
