Tech Debaters
In Semi-Finals
Lamar Tech debaters, Sue
Hill and R obert Jerald King,
will return to Dallas March
26 to compete in the semi-
finals of the Texas inter-
collegiate debate tourna-
ment, " Young America
Speaks." The LT debaters
have won their two previous
battles over Texas A&M
and TCU in this tournament
s p o nsored by the Sinclair
Refining Co.
The oil company awards
the winning school $1,000
and the loser $500 for the
school's scholarship funds.
The T e ch debaters will
explore the affirmative is-
sue of the topic "Resolved:
that the Federal Govern-
ment should subsidize the
higher education of su-
perior students." Their
opponents will be the win-
ner of the Baylor vs. North
Texas State debate.
The coach of the LT team
is Arnold C. Anderson,
professor of Speech, and
the alternates are Kathryn
Williams and Frank Lee
Myers.
Tech To Host
UIL Contest
Lamar Tech will be the
host of the annual Univer-
sity Interscholastic League
solo and ensemble contest
Marcb 17 and 18.
Band Director Pete Wiley
announced that 12 experts
from outside of this area
will judge the solo s and
ensembles in the Music-
S p e ech Building today and
tomorrow.
Wiley st ated that he is
expecting2,000 junior high
and high school participants
from the south-east Texas
area.

Attend Meeting
Five Lamar Tech students
left yesterday afternoon to
attend the State TSEA Con-
vention in Fort Worth
which is being held this
weekend at Hotel Texas.
The students attending the
convention are A1 Neil,
Vivien Powers, Travis
Roseen, Millie Shuford and
Carol Smith. They were
accompanied to Fort Worth
by Charles Wilbanks, spon-
s o r of the Lamar chapter
of the SEA. Mr. Neil and
Miss Smith have recently
been named Mr. and Miss
Teacher at Lamar and will
b e competing fer the title
of Mr. and Miss TSEA.
Candid ates for Mr. and
Miss TSEA will be judged
by faculty members of
Fort Worth schools and
colleges on the basis of
appearance and poise,
per s onal qualities, scho-

fessional background, co-
and extra-curricular ac-
tivities, professional in-
terest, overall sincerity,
leadership and presentation
of a final speech. Topics
for this speech will be
concerned with the con-
vention theme, "Education
—A Noble Profession."
The Lamar Tech group
will co nduct a workshop
dis cussion group entitled
"Membership Recruitment
and Attendance." Also Mr.
Neil will represent Lamar
on a panel which will con-
sist of a representative
from Texas A&M, Univer-
sity of Texas, and Texas
Lutheran University. The
title of the panel discussion
will be "Students Take a
Look At Professional
Standards." Mr. Wilbanks
will be the adult consultant
of the group.

The annual management
conference of Lamar Tech
will be held Friday and
Saturday, March 23-24,
with I.F. Betts, president
of American National Bank
of Beaumont, as conference
chairman.
Some 300 men from all
levels of management are
expected, according to E .E.
Miller, director of the
Lamar School of Vocations,
which sponsors the con-
ference .
"The Changing Super-
visory Picture" has been
selected as the conference
theme by the advisory com -
mittee, headed by Mr. Betts.
Director of the conference
will be Charles L. Eldridge,
Lamar Tech co-ordinator
of classes for supervisors.
