THE REDBIRD
February 7,1958
Redbirds Lose Games
To Javelinas&Bobcats
by James Mellard
The Texas A&I Javelinas
parlayed a hot first half
anf the scoring of Jay Haw-
ley and Don McDonald into
a hard-earned 65-55 hard-
wood victory over Lamar
Tech's Cardinals in Kings-
ville Saturday night. The
Hogs built up a command-
ing 37-21 lead in the initial
canto and then staved off
a determined second half
bid by the Cards to rack
up their third conference
win. The loss was the
Birds' fourth, the same
number owned by the Hogs
The Cardinals hit a gooo
46% from the field and a
terrific 67% in the second
half, but the taller Hogs
out-rebounded the Birds
and held a good lead
in this vital department.

However, it was the poor
defensive work in the first
half that plucked the Birds.

Donald with 19 led the
scorers, getting most of
them in the first half. Jor
them in the first half. Joe
Ben Vaughn led Tech with
12 and was followed by
Bobby Courville, the form-
er French star, and James
Mellard, each with 10.
BOBCATS BEAT CARDS
Lamar Tech's road-
weary Cardinals took ano-
ther one on the beak Mon-
day night as the Bobcats of
Southwest Texas out-
scored the Redbirds 74-
52. It was a case of too
much board strength as the

Cardinals Tackle Two
Top Conference Foes
With their tail feathers
drooping under a 2-5 con-
ference record, the Lamar
Tech Cardinals have their
work cut out for the re-
mainder of the season, and
especially for the next
week. First, the Birds in-
vade the lair of the revenge-
minded Lions of East Tex-
as State. After taking on
EastTe^cas, the Redbirds go
to Nacogodoches to play tne
current number two team in
the conference, the Stephen
F. Austin Lumberjacks. The
Axemen chopped down the
Cardinals in their initial
league contest, 52-35. The
Cardinals are out of tne
race for the conference
cahmpionship but they woul
like nothing more than to
knock the Lions or the Lum-
berjacks out of the title
After five consecutive
road games, the Cardinals
return home to entertain the
Sam Houston Bearcats on
Thursday, Feb. 13 at Mac-
Arthur gym. The way the
standings are now this looms
as a battle for last place in
the conference; and the Bear -
cats can be expected to lay
it on the line against Tech
next Thursday, for they have
lost five straight gabies
after having been defeated
in Huntsville by the Cards,
65-54.
East Texas is leading the
Lone Star Conference with
a 7-lrecord followed by
S.F.A., 6-2; Southwest
Texas, 5-3, Texas A&I,
4-5, Howard Payne, 3-5,
and Lamar Tech, Sul Ross,
and Sam Houston all with
2-5 records.

Sticklers!
TAXI DRIVING, at best, is a checkered career. Some
days, nothing seems to click—including the meter!
Traffic crawls, motor stalls, horns bleat, bumpers
meet. What a moment to reach for a Lucky—and
discover (horrors!) you’re fresh out. That’s when the
most genial driver turns into a Crabby Cabby. And
why not? He’s missing the best taste going ... a
cigarette that’s light as they come. Luckies are all
fight tobacco — good-tasting tobacco, toasted to
taste even better. Try ’em yourself. And step on it!
DON’T JUST STAND THERE ...
STICKLE!
MAKE $25
Sticklers are simple riddles with
two-word rhyming answers. Both
words must have the same num-
ber of syllables. (No drawings,
please!) We'll shell out $25 for all
we use—and for hundreds that
never see print. So send stacks of
'em with your name, address,
college and class to Happy-Joe-
Lucky, Box 67A, Mount Vernon,
New York.
