Skid continues as Cards lose 35-10
Woodville junior Burton Murchison is tackled after a short gain.

From staff reports
The Lamar football team tied a
school record for futility Saturday
night, losing their 12th consecutive
game.
The Cards lost their last eight
games in 1985 and are 0-4 this year
after being steamrolled 35-10 by
Texas A&I at Cardinal Stadium.
While the Cardinals were mat-
ching a record for consecutive
losses, Javelina Head Coach Ron
Harms won his 100th game.
“I can’t say enough about how
well the defense played,” Harms
said. “This unit has battled in each
game and finally found itself
tonight (Saturday). We needed the
defense to come around to complete
the team and we got this tonight.”
Lamar Head Coach Ray Alborn
had a clearer perspective of the
Cards’ performance after viewing
the film.
“It wasn’t near as bad as we all
thought during the course of the
game,” Alborn said Monday.
“Shawn Morgan, Burton Mur-
chison and Shad Smith had good
games. Defensively, we weren’t
very consistent although Alja Jones
had a good game.”
The defense ran into a road block
in the form of Javelina freshman
running back Johnny Bailey.
Bailey came into the game with
689 yards rushing and added 204 to
that total in leading the Javelinas.
Running mate Heath Sherman add-
ed 94 yards and three touchdowns
as the Texas A&I backfield ac-
cumulated 374 yards rushing
against a porous Cardinal defense.
On the night, the Javelinas
amassed 471 total offense com-
pared to 153 for the Cards. Wood-
ville junior Burton Murchison led
the Cards in rushing with 59 yards.
Missouri City sophomore running
back Morgan turned in his best per-
formance with 32 yards on seven
carries. Also, Morgan caught two
passes for 37 yards for 69 all-
purpose yards on the night.
League City sophomore quarter-
back Smith was sacked four times
for minus 34 yards and one time
had to be helped off the field.
Smith completed eight of 16
passes for 95 yards and did not
throw an interception.
Another plus for the Cards on an
otherwise dismal night was the

kicking game. Alto, Texas,
freshman Bryan Campbell punted
six times for a 44-yard average and
Waco, Texas, junior Mike Andrie
booted a 46-yard field goal.
After the Javelinas took a 6-0 lead
on Sherman’s 1-yard plunge in the
first quarter, the Cardinals scored
at the 12:07 mark of the second
quarter on a 7-yard run by Mur-
chison. Andrie’s kick gave Lamar
its only lead at 7-6.
With only 81 seconds elapsed off
the clock, the Javelinas were back
on top to stay courtesy of a 39-yard
run by Bailey.
Bailey ran for the two-point con-
version and the Javelinas were up
14-7. The Cards came back to score
on Andrie’s 46-yard boot with 4:11
left in the first half.
After receiving the second half
kickoff and failing to make a first
down, Texas A&I took over with
13:52 left in the third quarter. After
earning a first down, Texas A&I
quarterback Darcy Davis was in-
tercepted by cornerback Keith
McFadden.
McFadden, however, fumbled
while returning the interception
and the Javelinas retained posses-
sion. Five plays later A&I quarter-
back Davis was picked off by
linebacker Taras Payne. Lamar
moved the ball 23 yards before pun-
ting.
Texas A&I scored on its next
possession when Sherman scored
his second touchdown on a 2-yard
plunge. The point after was good
for a 21-10 lead and the Javelinas
never looked back.
After losing one yard on three
plays the Cards again had to punt.
After exchanging punts one more
time, the Javelinas marched 58
yards and scored on James
Guidry’s 6-yard run to surge ahead
28-10.
The Javelinas had attempted a
field goal on fourth down from the
Lamar 26, but the Cards roughed
the kicker, giving a first down and
new life to the Texas A&I offense.
After losing 11 yards on three
plays, Campbell punted to the A&I
48-yard line where Kerry Simien
was able to break a couple of
tackles and return the ball to the
Cardinal 19-yard line. Three plays
later the Javelinas pushed across
another score for a 35-10 lead.
I was extremely disappointed in
our game Saturday with Texas A&I.
We all appreciate the support of the
student body, cheerleaders and the
band. I especially would like to
thank the Big Red Recruiters for the
decorations at Stadium Hall.
Lamar played a good first half,
although trailing 14-10. We all felt we
were in the game.
A couple of key plays I felt turned
the contest. We failed to punt and
gave a field goal and we were called
for roughing the kicker. Both plays
led to touchdowns.
A new season—conference
play—begins Saturday night against
Northeast Louisiana University.
This is our first conference game;
we have wiped the slate clean.
Thanks again to all for your sup-
port.
