take on the Trinity Tigers in a
Southland Conference tilt of great
importance to the Cardinals title
hopes.
The Birds are in a tie for the
Conference lead with the Univer-
sity of Southwestern Louisiana,
and must win against Trinity if
they wish to keep their title
chance alive. The Cards are 4-0
in loop play and stand 9-10 over-
all.
Trinity is running dead ; last
in the SLC with an 0-4 mark and
are 6-12 for the season.
These two teams met earlier
in the year at McDonald Gym,
with Lamar taking that game 103-
77. This first meeting was the
initial Conference outing for both
teams and, so far, has been re-
presentative of the team Con-
ference records.
Lamar returns home Tuesday
to go against the University of
Northeastern Louisiana in anon-
Conference game. Then Thurs-
day, the Birds take on USL in
McDonald Gym. As in football,
thi game will count on the Con-
ference record for USL but not
for Lamar.
The Bulldogs finished third in
the NCAA College Division last
year, and did not lose a starter
from that 24-3 club. They are
ranked 13 in the Associated Press
National College Poll and have
already defeated ninth - ranked
Long Beach State.

Monday’s meeting.
Pan American University
stopped Lamar’s win streak at

Arkansas State crumbles
under Cardinal attack
since toe pre-season poUs were
released.
Lamar has already defeated
each of its Conference foes once,
and need only a repeat perfor-
mance of what it has already
done to be assured of, at least,
a share of the Conference title.
Steve Wade, toe Birds lead-
ing rebounder, is still on toe
doubtful list, and this could prove
to be a hinderance for toe Card-
inals.
Arkansas State, heralded as the
team to beat Southland Confer-
ence, fell before toe pressing La-
mar Cardinal team of Jack Martin
Saturday night.
Playing in Jonesboro before
very few Card fans, the Birds
topped toe Indians, 85 to 76.
The upset enables toe Cards to
keep place with the highflying
Ragin’ Cajuns of Southwestern
Louisiana. The Lafayette five
are currently No. 12 in the nation
and 6-0 in league play.
Martin’s Cardinals are 4-0 and
will take on Southwestern Louis-
iana Thursday night in McDonald
Gym.
The Indians jumped' to a 7 to 1
lead early in the game, but the
fighting Cardinals closed the gap
and took a 45-43 lead into toe
dressing room at halftime.
Trennis Jones and Kirby
Collins shared the scoring honors
for toe Birds with 18 each.

High School, has inked a grant-
in-aid with Lamar, to become toe
Cardinals 11th recruit of toe 1972
campaign.
Cotton, a 5-9, 185-pounder is
noted for his blocking ability. He
earned all-district honors his so-
phomore and junior season, while

toe Cougars moved to class 3-A
this past season, he was named to
all-zone team in toe district.
Hughes and Bill Jackson added
15 each with Willie Griggie put-
ting in 10.
Arkansas out rebounded the
Cards 58 to 48, but the Redbirds

line, hitting 25 out of 32. Ar-
kansas hit on only 16 of 25.
Jackson, who replaced the in-
jured Steve Wade pulled down
13 rebounds to lead toe Cards.
