• Feb. 4, 1789, George Washington was
chosen president by all electors voting (73 eli-
gible, 69 voting, 4 absent); John Adams was
chosen vice president.
• Feb 4, 1899, Filipino insurgents, unable
to attain recognition of independence from
the United States, began guerrilla warfare.
•January 31, 1917, Germany, suffering
from the British blockade, declared almost
unrestricted submarine warfare.
• Feb. 3, 1917, the United States cut all
diplomatic ties with Germany.
• Feb. 4,1945, the Yalta Conference in the
Crimea began with President Franklin
Roosevelt, Prime Minister Winston Churchill
of England and Soviet leader Josef Stalin in
attendance.
• Jan. 31, 1950, President Harry Truman
authorized production of the H-Bomb
•Jan. 31,1958, the Explorer I, the first U.S.
earth satellite to go into orbit, was launched
by the Army from Cape Canaveral, Ha.; it
subsequently discovered the Van Allen radia-
tion belt.
• Feb 1,1960, sit-ins began when four black
college students in Greensboro, N.C., refused
to move from a Woolworth lunch counter
when denied service.
• Jan. 30,1968, the “Tet offensive” began
when Communist troops attacked Saigon and
30 province capitals.
•Feb. 3, 1984, the space shuttle,
Challenger, was launched on its fourth trip
into space
•Feb. 4,1988, federal grand juries in Miami
and Tampa returned indictments against Gen.
Manuel Noriega of Panama, declaring that he
had protected and otherwise assisted the
Medellin drug cartel.
•Feb. 3, 1994, President Clinton
announced that the United States was lifting
its trade embargo against Vietnam.
•Jan. 31, 1995, U.S. Secretary of Defense,
William Perry, said that Haiti was “safe and
secure” and that U.S. troops had put an end
to all but occasional incidents of violence.
•Jan. 30, 1995, the U.N. Security Council
authorized deployment of 6,000 peacekeepers
to train Haiti’s police and military and to help
prepare for elections.
Jan. 30, 1995, the conflict in Algeria
between the military-run government and
Muslim fundamentalists seeking to overthrow
it reached a new high in bloodshed when a car
bomb exploded in Algiers and claimed 42
lives.
Jan. 31,1995, after Congress failed to act,
President Clinton invoked his emergency
authority to provide a $20 billion loan to
Mexico.
