Havana, Dec. 11.—La Lucha
referring editorially to a protract-
ed meeting being held by sugar
planters of the island, presided
over by the Marquis j De Apezte-
gala to devise ways and means for
gathering cane and beginning the
work of grinding, says it will be
impossible to accomplish any-
thing unless the government goes
to the assistance of the planters
with the necessary funds of
♦300,000.
The planters throughout the is-
land La Lucha says, lack every
means required to harvest cane or
to transport the crop to points of
shipment. The country is destitute
of oxen and if they were obtain-
able the planters, with the possi-
ble exception of a dozen in the
pro vim es of Santa Claia and
Matanzas, have neither money nor
credit to purchase them. The
oxen from numerous estates were
doi ated to the government by the
owners and have been employed
since the commencement of tb<-
war in transporting supplies for
the troops.
La Lucha adds that as the sugar
estates are large, the rebels stir
rendering daily, who were cnietly
recruited from the laboring class
es and are now tired of their fruit-
less struggle, might l>e concen
trated thereon and given an op-
portunity to e«*rn a salary and en-
courage others to lay down their
arms and thus by the promptest
liberal action of the government
in fostering a continuance of the
work on the sugar states nfb-r a
more practical solution of the Cu-
ban problem than all the political
plans emanating from Madrid.

this medicine to rout and conquer
this disease. Hood's Sarsapariila

The Cincinnati Enquirer sa\s:
"It was a veritable treat to s't
through the story of Hamlet with
Walker Whiteside. It is not a
a wonder that he has captured
metropolitan audiences, nor that
the critics have halted to seriously
consider the fairest, most youth
ful, scholarly for his years and
graceful withal, that aspired to
the kingly crown of the world's
tragic star. It would not be pol-
icy nor justice to so frank » man
as Mr. Whiteside, nor would h?
permit it, to say that he is the
equal of Booth, but the spirit of
absolute fairness to the aspirant,
modest though he be, is that peo-
ple who last night found their
palms meeting in appreciation in-
voluntarily found themselves com-
paring the Hamlet of Mr. White-
side to the Hamlet of Mr. Booth,
and then congratulating them-
selves that each century 'supplies
a man.' "
Mr. Whiteside will be at the
onera house next Monday, Decem-
ber 13.

Watkins Granted Bail.
The Ardmore Chronicle of yes
terday contained the following
court item:
The habeaus corpus proceed-
ings in the Bud Watk ns murder
trial was completed yesterday,
resulting in the defendant being
released on bail in the sum of
$10,000. In this case the attor-
ney for the defense took the
broad and logical ground that the
verdict of the jnry in the former
trial having been reversed by the
court of appeals on the very point
on which bail would or would not
hioge, the defendant was fairly en-
titled to the privilege of bond
