The Remains of Ex-Speaker
Crisp In ferred.
Americas, Ga., Oct. 26.—The
remains of ex-Spea":er Crisp were
buried ia Oak Grove cemetery last
evening. The body was brought
lere on a special train from At*
anta.
When the train arrived at
Americus the entire population of
the city had gathered at the sta-
tion. The vast assemblage stood
n silence with uncovered heads
i;o show their respect for the dead.
All the bells of the city were
tolled and added to the solemity
of the occasion. The casket was
coveyed from the special car to
the hearse, which was drawn by
four black horses, each led by a
sable groom.
The Americus Light Infantry
and a delegation of forty citizens
pAceded the hearse and the pro-
cession started to the Methodist
church. The buildings along the
line of march were draped in
mourning At the church'one
hour was devoted by Mr. Crisp's
friends to reviewing the remains.
The remains were accompanied
by Governor Atkinson and staff^
delegations irom Atlanta and*
other cities of the state, members
of the Georgia bar association,
Hoke Smith, ex-secretary of the
interior; Congressman Charles L.
Bartlett and C. C. Black, ex-con-
gressman Barnea, a military es-
cort of commisioned officers of the
Fifth Georgia regiment and sev-
eral hundred citizens, contributed
by the towns wherever the train
stopped.
Geueral Clement A. Evans de-
livered the funeral oration at the
church, at the conclusion of the
coclusion of tne services there
the remains being conveyed to the
cemetery.
All the houses along the route
were draped. The procession
passed by the house the Crisp
family dwelt in years ago.
Friends had placed a large arch
over the gateway on whi^h were
the w^rds: "His Old Home."
People lined the sidewalks
from the cb nch to the cemetery.
Arriving at the grove, the milita-
ry opened ranks and stood at
"present arms." Tho remains
were carried to the family burial
plot and after a prayer, read by
General Evans, the body was

me, show thyself, demoD, and
speak to thy master."
At this moment a distinct smell
of burning brimstone caused the I
s'out burghers to draw their noses |
away from the doorand stifle their
oonghing as best they could.
A sharp shrill voice was now |
heard to answer.
"Master, what dost thou desire |
ot thy servant!"
The door was broken down and I
the stranger dragged before the
magistrate, charged with being in ]
league with the devil. The strang-
er quietly said:
"I had begun a tragedy, but as|
my friends disturbed me con-
tinually at Weimar, where I live,
1 came to write here. The hero of j
my tragedy is a man who invokes
the devil, and to whom the devil
appears. I confess that I have an
unfortunate habit of reading aloud
what I compose as fast as 1 write j
it. As to my invoking, perhaps
personally, the devil, I am too J
good a christian to do that, and
you Mr. Burgomaster, too en-
lightened to believe it."

New York, Oct. 26.—A dispatch
to the Herald from Key West,
Fla., says:
Well informed passengers who
arrived from Havana last night
confirm advices received by mail
that Maceo has crossed the Tro
cha at Artemisa and joined other
insurgent forces in Havana pro
vince. They declare that the re
port circulated by Maceo of his
encampment at Cacarajicara and a
contemplated attack on that town
was merely a bluff to concentrate
the Spanish troops at that point.
That the ruse was successful
was proved by the fact that Gen
eral Gonzales Lunoz, with large
forces, was sent in that direction
to attack Maceo, but upon their
arrival at Cacarajicara the Span
iards found nothing but a de-
serted camp.
Maceo's followers under forced
marches then made a devour
through the southward and sud-
denly appeared at Artemisa, the
central port on the line of the
trocha Giving his men tempora-
ry rest the insurgent chief sent
word to the commandant that he
intended to bombard the town,
giving the inhabitants five hours
to leave the city. Not heeding
Maceo's threats, the Spaniards
would allow no one to leave the
oity. The result is known from
the repotts which have already
been cabled from Havana.
Maceo opened fire on the town
with his artilery and thirty shots
from the rebel dynamife gnn were
thrown into the city. Every
building is said to Lave been lev-
eled, while tbe slaughter of
non - combatants was appall-
ing. During the carnage Maceo
and his followers crossed the line
of the trocha into Havana pro
vince, where they joined the
foires of General Aguirre.
