Jno. S. Fletcher, Agt.
General Rosser was greeted last
night by an appreciative audience.
The confederate veterans were
there because they loved him.
Federal veterans were there be-
cause they respected him, and the
younger people were there because
they wanted to see and hear one
of the great heroes whose deeds
have immortalized our southland.
The ladies, who always admire
heroes, were there in full force.
Our young soldiery in full uni-
forms occupied front seats to hear
the battle scarred veteran tell of
real war.
The general is younger than
most of the survivors of the war,
being only 59, though he looks
still younger. He went from
Texas to West Point when a boy,
and can be claimed as a Texan.
During the war he was with the
army of Northern Virginia and
surrendered at Appomattox,
being then a major-general of
cavalry. He received eleven
wounds, but is still a strong, ac-
tive man. He was saluted by the
Hemming Guards when he ap-
peared on the stage and graceful-
ly acknowledged the honor.
He was introduced by C. C.
Hemming in a glowing speech
which was heartily received by
the audience.
His lecture was the story of the
army of Northern Virginia and
was a long and thrilling one.
At its close the following reso-
lutions weie adopted:
Resolved, by the Joseph E.
Johnston Camp No. 110. United
Confederate Veterans, with head-
quarters at the city of Gainesville,
Texas; the sons and daughters of
confederate veterans and citizens
of our beloved southland, with
hearts pulsating with the strong-
est veneration for the old soldiers,
who, in vindication of what they
believed to be an inherent and
constitutional right, tcave their
lives and foitunes, that we having
learned with profound satisfaction
of the interest, generosity and un-
precedented offer of Mr. Charles
Broadway Rouss of New York
City, who in the cause we loved
but lost, but was a brave and true
member of the Thirteenth Vir-
ginia Regiment, Rosser's division
of the cavalry of Northern Vir-
ginia. in donatiug to the south
#100,000 for the building of "The
Sooth Battle Abbey/' in which is
to be collected and provision be
made for the preservation, as a
rich inheritance to our children
aud a patriotic object lesson for
uenerations to ome, of the me-
mentoes of the struggle of the
south fcr civil liberty and the
evidences* of her glorious powers
that are now scattered broadcast
over our country.
Therefore, as a feeble testimon-
ial of our eternal gratitude to this
noble, true hearted son of Dixie
for this benevolent act, we tender
to him our best wishes and prayers
ro God that he may be yet lestored
ro sight and behold the grandeur
if his gigantic conception.
Resolved, by the Joseph E.
Johnston Camp No. 119, United
Confederate Veterans, and by the
citizens of Gainesville and Cooke
county. Texas, that our thanks be
and they are tendered to Gereral
Thomas L. Rosser of Virginia for
his able and instructive lecture
upon ''The Army of Northern
Virginia; or, the Battles in Which
I Participated."
Resolved, further, that we com-
mend General Rosser to all the
intelligent and cultured citizens of
our southland as a faithful laborer
in the gigantic and patiiotic work

In a short time the flames
spread to the warehouse of M. F.
Allen & Co., the Clements build-
ing and Hotel Peterson.
The Are raged with desperate
fury until 7 o'clock, when the fire-
men, by the greatest skill and
courage, succeeded in getting it
under control.
John Saulsman, a tie inspector
from Wister, I. T., who was oc-
cupying a room in tue Bywaters Dental 31 yrrh,
building, was suffocated aud burn-
td to death. There is a suspicion
that he was murdered and the
building set on fire to conceal the
crime. Officers are investigating.
At 10:30 this morning, while the
firemen were placing on the
flames, a wall fell, crushing S. H.
Ramsey and Louis Rootche, the
former fatally and the latter ser-
iously.
The Hotel Peterson was the
largest in North Texas outside of
Dallas and Fort Worth, and was
valued at 800 000;insuied for $20-
000.
It is the heaviest tire here in
twenty years.
