A Btmeittd Woman Suioidei.
Gainesville, Tex., Dec. 1
The body of a woman was found
floating in Elm Creek, about two
miles north of thrs city, yester-
day morning. It was the mortal
remains of Mrs. S. E. Smith, who
until last night at 12 o'clock, was
one of the county's wards at the
poor farm. She was demented
and caused the keepers much
trouble in watching her. Some
time last night she pried two
boards off the side of the house
and through the opening this
made escaped. A search was be-1
gun as soon as she was missed,
and a few hours later the crown
of her head was discovered above
the water of the creek, which was
near the poor house. The search-
ers were led to the spot by a
handkerchief which she had tied
to the limb of a tree as if to mark
the spot of her death. On the
trunk of the same tree was a
piece of paper on which were pen-
cil marks, doubtless intended for
a record of her last insane
thoughts, but it could not be de-
ciphered. Her skirts were pin-
ned about her legs closely, as if
to make drowning carcain, and
her hands were folded across her

The girl was very »ch and the
young man was poor but honest.
She liked him but that was all and
he knew it. One night he had
been a little more tender than
usual.
"You are very rich," he ven-
tured.
"Yes, she replied frankly,
am worth a million dollars.'
"And i am poor."
"Yes."
"Will you marry mel"
"No."
"i thought you wouldn't."
"Then why did you ask me?"
"Oh, just to see how a man
feels when he loses a million," and
the girl smiled. —Detroit Free-

Wasted: More Anarohisti.
The inimitable John Howard
puts the case briefly and point-
edly when he says the need of
Texas is more "anarchists" of
the type denounced by the Dallas
News.
The magnificent progress of the
Panhandle, as shown in its well-
tilled fields and in its thriving
towns , is due, as John says, to
these same "anarchists," these
terrible fellows who voted lor
Hogg for governor. They have
made a record for rapid and sub-
stantial development unparalleled
in the history of the West. Where
are the people to be found who
have beaten them? Yet they vot-
ed for Hogg, and hence they are
now classed as "anarchists," "com-
munists" and "nationalists," "hat-
ers of wealth," a people with
whom the money of the foreigner
is unsafe.
Was ever a viler libel uttered
against an entire class of people?
Go ask the merchants of the
Panhandle, News, about these
farmers, who voted almost solidly
for Hogg- The merchants are
surely unbiased, for they, as a
rule, supported Clark. "Vet we
think they will tell you that what
Texas needs, at least what their
part ot Texas needs, is more of
these "anarchists."—Fort Worth
