Yesterday was return dar with Squire
Loomis, whose time w»s fully occ pied.
In the morala* the case < f J. E. Law-
rence vii._J..A. A»hford came up. This
case attracted considerable attention, in-
asmuch as it was tried on the merits of
the lieu law. which the charter gives on
assessed property. Judge Loomis re-
served his opiaion until Monuay.
Iu the afternouilie case ot II. F. Allen
et al vs. W. G Walz vas called. Thia
suit was concerning the sufficiency of a
com ract, and judgmentwas rendered for
aevouty-tive dollars and cos«s against the
defendaut.
The evening was occupied ia the trial
of the state of Texas vs. May Moody,
charged with threatening te burn the
house occupied by Augusta Manning, iu
which a peace bond was Axed and giren
at thirty-five dollars. It stems this is
but ouu of a number ef embarassing
suits brought by the parties therein^-and
the end is not vet.
Lots o' Fixins at
Street Car Nswi.
Two new cars, Nos.^five and six, were
put on the old street car route yesterday,
and tiiey are beauties. They were
brought out Ik cause of Jie fiesta on the
other side mt the river, and they wete
crowded all day. They were made by
Brill AC©., of Philadelphia, and- cost
•1,000 apiece, and give better satisfaction
than At old Stevenson cars. The rail-
road company hare lately spent 03,000
on thr 3*4 track and equipment*, being
the two ears ab-jve mentioned, and r<
pairs on fie track and laying of new
switches. Six thousand dollars has been
spent on the new track on San Antonio
street, which includes a. very fine car.
Work waa done yesterday on grading
the approaches at the side streets, which
is very much nteded. Grading of San
Antonio street is now in order and when
It is brought up to the proper grade it
will be a^bandaome drive. The State

Til• Rritlsli la New York.
We have uow not safely through cele-
brating the evueuatlou of New* York by
the Brkii-b, and it may nut be out of
place to inquire why we should not also
celebrate their occupancy of New York.
They sai cd away, it is true, in 1783.
But they have beeu s. iling back ever
since. New York under Cornwallis,
Tryon and Clinton was not half as Brit-
ish as it is under the Uuion Club, the
Murray Hill regime aud the worship of
Briti-b lords aud the Priuce ef Wales.
There was no Coaching club here in 17*13;
no fox-hunting clubs; |iio Piccadilly col-
lars or Prime Albert coats. The natives
did noi drop their h's, and the American
ladies did not try to ride 10 hounds or
marry Euglish titles. Eng'ish ways
were very unpopular. English poodles
were not the fashion, and English actors
were scarce.
On the whole, it would be a capital
i lea to celebrate the return of the Brit-
ish, for we may be &uie then that our
best socie»y would join the procession.—

An English tobacconist of a reflective
turn of nunc! has studied human charac-
ter by observing the manner in which
his customers takj their cigars. His con-
clusions are to the effect that au even-
tempered, quiet man choos^-s tobacco of
moderate quality. A nervous man wauls
something strong and lurious; a mild
man something that will smoke and
nothing moie. The easy-going man
smokes his cigar only enough lo keep it
going, and frequently lakes it from his
mouth to cast a curl of smoke into the
air. The cool, calculating man, not
physically energetic, but who lives ea lly
off the labor of others, grips his cigar
iu his teeth, and is iudifferent whether it
burns or dies. The cigar chewcr is a hu-
man bull-dog. The good-natured, glib-
tongued man lets his cigar go out fre-
quently.
