Hon. Barney Glbbs spoke at the
court house last night. The big
room was packed and it is sate to
presume that the entire populist
party of Cooke county was in at-
tendance, besides a large number
of democrats.
The speaker was introduced in
a neat speech by Hon. R. V. Bell
and was greet d by a terrific
round ofl^Vplause.
Mr. Gibbs gave his reasons for
desertiug the democratic aud join-
ing the populist party. He said
be got tired following a gang that
wonld steal one section at a time
of another's platform, so he con-
cluded he would leave the whole
gang and swallow the Omaha
platform at one gulp. He said the
16 to 1 democrats in Texas re-
minded him of "the orphan calf
that went around trying to suck
everything in the cow pen."
"Hogg and Clark and Culberson
and the gold bugs and the silver
bugs have kissed and made up
oftener than a pair of lovers and
now they are in the divorce courts
for political incompatibility" was
a bit of humor introduced by the
speaker that brought forth tremen-
dous applause.
Mr. Gibbs at times roasted the
president, Mr. Carlisle, the pres-
ent and past congresses, in fact
everything else at the national
capital except the few poDulists
and said the entire blame for all
the meanness committed by the
present billion dollar congress
was being placed on their shoul-
ders.
The speaker was in possession
of every platform adopted by all
parties since the inception of this
government, but lie refrained
from commenting on all of them
and confined himself to the Omaha
set, they being the only salvation
of the people today.
Mr. Gibbs has the reputation of
SPEAKS. John Fletcher, the occasion being
their annual summer reunion.
Him Each member was privileged to
invite two guests, who were as
follows:
Mrs. Shelly of Dallas, Mrs.
Hughes of California, Mrs. Bomar,
Mrs. W. O. Davis, Mrs. Almond,
Mrs. Hemming, Mrs. F. H. Sher-
wood, Mrs. Simpson, Mrs. Maho-
ney, Mrs. Albert Faiichild, Mrs.
C. R. Smith, Mrs. J. M. Potter,
Mrs. Rines, Mrs. Rose, Mrs.
Wasson, Mrs. Tyler, Misses Com-
egys and Fitzgerald, and the
members of the eucher club. The
decorations were of wild flowers
arranged in masses so prettily as
to suggest Campbell's little coup-
let:
"Ye wild flowers! the gardens
eclipse you 'tis true,
Yet wildings of nature, I dote
npon you."
Simple refreshments were serv-
ed—champagne ice, cake and lem-
onade.
The tilt was animated from
start to finish, resulting in the
capture of the club prize, a ster-
ling lorgnette, by Miss Mamie
Rines; and the guest's prize, a
cut glass vignette, by Mrs. Sher-
wood. The consolations were
given to Mesdames Peers and El-
dridge, "Pole on whist," with
appropriate suggestions.

Death of Gilbert Nutting.
Thursday night at 10:30 o'clock
Gilbert Nutting, aged 20 years,
died at bis father's residence in
this city, after a lingering illness
of typhoid fever. The death of
this young man has made many
sad hearts outside of the family
circle, where his bright face was
always like a ray of sunshine.
He was a mother's joy, a father's
pride and one upon whom brothers
and sisters doted.
In the outside world—beyond
the parental roof—Gilbert was
also a favorite. For five years he
had been in the employ of Henin-
ger Brothers and by his employers
he was (rusted and by them favor-
ed in many ways as a mark of his
genuine worth.
His friends, too, were numer-
ous, for in him was that nobility
of character, honesty of purpose,
unswerving integrity, and with
all an ever present urbanity and
high regard for the feelings of
others that made him a decided
favorite with young and old, the
business man and the social devo-
tee. Indeed he was a manly gem,
full of bright promises for the
future and his untimely death is
profoundly felt. It is indeed a
pity that one so young should be
called hence, but father, mother,
sisters, brothers and friends can
find consolation in the fact that
"beyond the river" Gilbert Nut-
ting is in that home not made by
human hands.

the charge and the case was set for
May 18. On that day Mr. Kam
er's attorney was unable to attend
and a further postponement was
had until May 29. Yesterday
afternoon the case came up and a
large number of witnesses were
examined. There was a vast
amount of contradictory evidence
introduced and long before the
arguments began it was plain that
the defendant wonld be honorably
acquitted.
Attorney Blanton for the city
and P. W. Gardner for the defend-
ant closed their arguments at 6:30
and the jury retired. In five min
utes a verdict of not guilty was
returned.
The court room was crowded
from begining to the close of the
trial by Mr. Earner's friends.
