FEARFUL DAMAGES,
The
Mississippi Breaks
Main Levee.
a
Memphis, Tenn., April 17.—
The crisis has arrived in North
ern Louisiana. The mighty force
of nature has won the tight. Last
night at 10 o'clock the workers
on the levee at Biggs four miles
below Delta, La., were horrified
to see a sudden bulge in their em
bankment. A small yellow stream
began to trickle through and a
moment later there was a crash.
The Louisiana levee system had
at last succumbed to the fearful
onslaught of the Mississippi river.
A general alarm was sounded,
and the inhabitants of the city be-
gan moving their valuable effects.
In thirty minutes the crevasse had
increased in size from a dozen
feet to fifty yards, the water pour-
ing through with fearful velocity.
There is a strip of swamp
about two miles wide immediate-
ly behind the levee where the
break occurred and beyond that
are many of the finest plantations
of Northern Louisiana.
Unless the crevasse can be
stopped the overflowed area will
include the lower half of Madison
parish and all of Teneas and Con-
cordia parishes. The fertile lands
that will be inundated are in the
highest state of cultivation. The
loss will be enormous.
The blade was broken in half in
tne struggle, but the man com
menced hacking at his throat with
that portion yet attached to the
handle.
The woman attempted to dis
arm him, but he evaded her and
rushed through the house, blood
spurting from his wounds and
dyeing the carpets and walls as
he passed through.
Throwing open the front door
the doctor ran out upon, the side-
walk and there commenced slash
ing at his left forearm, seeking to
sever an arterv-
He succeeded in making thirty
distinct wounds in his arm before
two men, who had been watching
him, summoned courage to inter-
fere.

Chicago, April 17.—Dr. Elmer
E. Prescott, son of the physician
of the same name, who was the
victim of a murder that developed
one of the most famous mysteries
in the police histoiy of the city,
made a determined attempt to kill
hinuelf at his home last night.
His condition this morning is
such that the attending physician
said recovery was impossible.
The details of the young physi
cian's attempt to take his life are
sensational.
It seems the doctor swallowed
ten grains of morphine and laid
down upon a couch.
Fifteen minutes later he rnshed
to the kitchen where a domestic
was at work and snatched a tibie
knife trom her hand.
