Dr. Lyman Abbott's Infidelity.
We publish eisewbere several
letters finding fault with us for
calling Dr. Lyman Abbott au infi-
del, because he ridicules the Bibli-
cal story of Jonah and the whale,
or the "great fish," as the Scrip-
ture describes it. Speaking or
the subject in Plymouth church
Dr. Abbott's remarks were in n
jocular vein, which canned mcrri
ment among his audience, with
the result that be has been called
to task sharply by other minis-
ters of the Congregational cbu.cl
a* falo* to his professed religious
•onviotions.
We said and we now repeat tlia'
the accusation was well founded
and that Dr. Abbott is really at
Infidel while professing to holt5
and to preach the christian faith
Oar objecting correspondents con
tend that belief in Christ doe* noi
require faith in His supernatura
origin, or His Divinity, but ma}
consist simply in the acceptance
of His docrine". As one of theo
expresses it, "there is no reasoi
why the doctor or any one els«
may not reject the supernatura
idea of the infallibility of th«
Bible and still be a christian."
Such a man ma> be a christian
as he may be a Spenoerian if bf-
agrees with the philosophy ol
Herbert Spencer; but he it not p
christian in the sense of the relig
ions belief in Jesn* Christ, whirl
is required of a man in order thai
ha mav obtain ordination in Con
gregational churches. A declara
tion of fatth adopted by Congre
rationalists in 1865 expresiet-
tbeir belief as still held with re-
gard to the divinity of Christ:
"We confess oar faith in God,
the Father, the Son, and the Holy
Ghost, the only living and trne
God; in Jeans Christ, the incar
nate Word, who is exalted to be
oar Redeemer and King; and it
the Holy Comforter, who is pre*
ent in the chnrch to regenerate
and sanctify the soul."
That is the religions belief in
Christ which Dr. Abbott and hi*
defenders reject; and hence they
are infidels. They deny the chris-
tian faith. Whether they have
reason for so doing is not the
question. In denying the super-
natural origin and authority of
Jeans Christ as the "incarnate
Word," they reject the essential
and fnndamentai doctrine of the
christian faith. If they agree
with the teachings of Jesus, and
accept them as merely human nt
teranoes, and only so far as this
agreement goes, on the gronnd
that «"the truth of the Master
needs no supernatural proof to-
day, their belief is no more re
ligioas faith than if they accep*
any other human philosophy.
They are not christians in the
sense of the Congregational decla
ration from which we have quoted
above.
Belief in Josus in that sense
necessarily implies belief in the
Infallibility of the Bible and in
lhe miracles recorded therein
Revelation itself can come only by
a miracle. It must be supernatural
in its source. Man can know of
the ways of God only by revela-
tion, for they are past finding out
by any human investigation The
knowledge of them must be de
rived, if it is derived at ail, from
supernatural and infallible an
thority alon<s. The greatest of all
miracles is the incarnation, npon
which depends the whole faith o
orthodox Christendom. The res
urrectlon was a miracle defying
the laws of nature as science
know* them; and the authoritv for
it rests solely in the infalibility o
the Scriptures.
Moreover, this very miracle of
Jonah and the whale, the Biblica
account of which was treated so
comically by Dr. Abbott, was es
pecially confirmed by Jesus him
self, and referred to as shadowing
forth the resurrection. Heie are
His words in the twelfth chapte
of the Gospel of St. Matthew:
"For as Jonas was three days
sua mree mgnis iu tiio wnaie'f
belly, so also shall the son of man
be three days and three nights in
the heart of the earth."
It will be seen, therefore, that
Dr. Abbott's offence againat the
christian faith, in making sport
of this particular miracle, was pe
culiatly flagrant. Why, too, is
thf-re any more reason for refus
ing to believe the s ory of Jonah's
experience with the wbale, a hi eh
we elsewhere copy from the Bible
than for rejecting any other of tho
miraculous occurrences described
in the scriptures, and upon which
the whole christian faith rests! I
one falls because it is impossibl
under natural law, stH the rest
must fail with it.
Consequently the Rev. Dr. Ly
man Abbott, pastor of Plymouth
church in Brooklyn, is incontest
ably an unbeliever; in othei
words, an infidel, He does not
believe in the Bible, and not be
'ieving in the Bible, he can not
believe in the christian religion.—

T IS SAID this eminent gentleman once remarked: "The statesman who delivers the longest speech is not always con-
sidered the best orator.'' Short, spicy, seasonable remarks, strictly to the point and containing essential elements neces-
sary to convey to the mind an adequate idea of the question at issue—these are the important factors which ultimately
have the desired effect and lead to success. This is exactly the method we adopt. What we say is said without
due preliminaries. The shortest route in a business sense is the quickest way to reach the goal.
So with advertising literature. We endeavor to make our intentions known in a short, spicy manner, dealing with
substantiate only. We take it for granted that should the public desire reading matter a good book or the sensational news
items of the day are much' more preferable. The everyday, worn and stereotyped advertisement, which nine times out #of
ten is read only by the man who wrote it is merely glanced at by the matter-of-fact reader and then cast aside. The impor-
tant features are lost sight of simply because the advertiser tires his readers with a long-winded preamble. We are not here
for our health, neither are we here to educate the people in a literary sense, yea, we need a few lessons in that direction our-
selves and are modest enough to confess it. Nevertheless we are educators. We desire to educate the people on live issues
of the day pertaining to the buyers of Dry Goods. We desire to educate the people up to the necessity of posting themselves
on the merits of our system of transacting business. We desire to educate the people up to the fact that our stores contain
the elements necessary to enable us to show the cleanest, neatest and most stylish conceptions on the market. In short *we
wish to educate everybody to the idea that our prices are incomparable, our institution supreme and from its ruling there is
no appeal. Following will be found some rare bargains:

It would 6urpr se the average
citizen of tins town and communi-
ty to know bow murh money has
been paid out for corn alone since
October last. Not less than fifty
cars, costing a little over $10,000,
have been received here, for which
the cash has been paid out. If
this amount of money remained in
town and surrounding country it
would add very materially to its
circulating medium and make its
financial condition much better.
It is much better to raise less cot-
ton and more corn, for then no
money would be spent for corn,
and by curtailing the acreage of
cotton a mnch smaller outpnt is
obtained, which brings a higher
price on acconnt of limited pro-
