A Hurricane at Sherman.
Sherman, Tex., Aug. ({.—This
afternoon about 2 o'clock a wind-
storm of the hurricane order, ac-
companied by a deluging rain,
which lasted over twenty minutes,
swept from the southeast across
South Sherman, extending only as
far north as Moore street in any
force. Two houses occupied by
Bill Young, colored, and William
Stone, colored, were practically
demolished. Young's wife and
three children were all more or
less painfully bruised but not se-
riously. Bill Stone's house was
only partially destroyed, but un-
fortunately it was tlie

hard Times With Saloons.
HlLLSBORO, Tex., July 18.—
County Attorney Jorday to day
notified the saloon men of (Inn
city that under the decision of the
court of criminal appeals in the
case of Componovo vs. the state,
(S. W. It. p. 1111; they were re-
quired to remove all screens in
their saloons. The court held
that if there was a partial ob-
struction, and done with tlie pur-
pose of obstructing the view, the
spirit and letter of the law were
thereby violated.—Dallas News.
Poor Hillsboro has certainly
had a tussel with the saloons for
the last eighteen months.
The anties said if we can get
the saloons back we will have a
different state of affairs to what
we have had for the last two years
under the local option. And sure
enough they have. As badly as
the local option law was defied
and overridden, it was much bet-
ter than it has been since the sa-
loon was voted back on the peo-
ple. The first thing we hear from
Hillsboro after the return of the
saloon is an account of a petition
by both pros and antis to the of-
ficers to enforce the Sunday law
and the gambling law. Then lat-
er on we hear the Hillsboro pa-
pers say that it is impossible for
the officers to control Sunday liq-
uor selling and gambling, and still
we learn that in eleven months
and twenty-two days after local
option was defeated that then-
had been filed in the different
courts at Hillsboro about 15011
cases for violating penal laws.
Now comes the News correspon-
eut and says that the saloon men
have been defying the law by hav-
ing screens before their bars.
Wonder why Ihe county attorney
waited for the decision referred
to? He knew all the time that it
was a violation of the law and yet
like many others sat back till he
was compelled to act. It actu-
ally seems like a majority of the
officers are looking for an excuse
to keep from enforcing the liquor
and gambling laws. We said it
before and will repeat it. Officers
w ho will not enforce the local op-
tion law will not enforce the Sun-
day and gambling laws. And offi-
cers who can't enforce the local
option law can't enforce these
other laws. Hillsboro was held
up by the Hunt county antis two
years ngo as a model prohibition
town and can now be held up by
the pros as a sample ol what sa-
loons will do for a town and the
pros will certainly make all Hun
can of it.—Kx.
