jfotlck.
It see ens doubtful whither any
machine can be contrived which
will so,perfectly overcome this dif-
ficulty and at the ssme time harvest
cotton so free from dirt as to sup-
plant in any large degree the man-
ual labor now thought to be ii^dis-
pen sable. If Mr.Mason's invention
can be made to fulfil ^he required
conditions it will be a boon of un-
told value to the south and to the
country. It is to be hoped we may
soon have full particulars of his
field experiments with the new
machine.—N. Y. Hernld.
Subscribers, agents and news-
dealers are requested to notify this
office at once, in case of any failure
to receive their papers promptly.
Our new circulator, Mr. James J.
Furlong, will be found as courteous
and prompt a's> the gentleman he
succeeds. Mr. W. H. Willbanks
will continue, however, to collect
for the Times. Mr. Willbanks has
established a City Collecting Agency
at the San Antonio House, and we
take pleasure in recommending him
to our business men as a thorough,
prompt and honest collector.

The Doctor's Mistake.
One of the old mistakes of the
profession was to think that there
▼ere no other ways of curing dis-
ease except those which had been
handed dowi- from former times
* It is not to be denied that the
Doctors have done great things^ for
the world. But when it comes right
down to the real curing of disease,
it niust be admitted that Brown's
Iron Bitters has done enough to
earn the generous gratitude of this
whole present generation, including
the* medical profession. There are
no mysteries or secrets about the
compounding of Brown's Iron Bit-
ters. This preparation of iron is the
only preparation which will not in-
jure teeth or stomach. In this it is
beyond comparison better than the
other preparations, which are mis-
chievous and injurious. °
You need not fear a mistake in
trying Brown's Iron B'tters. You«
druggist has it. It gives vigor to
the feeble, and new-life to the dys-
peptic. Children take it, not only
with safety, but with great ad van

The Silver City Southwest-Sen
tinel sars: "An associated press
dispatch from EI Paso states that
"the city council has ordered the
health officer to board every incom-
ing train, and to examine for infec-
tious diseases. The neighboring
cities are so unhealthy that this
precaution is neceBsary." Decided-
ly cool, this, in view of tbe fact that
El Paso is notoriously the most ua
healthy town in the southwest. "We
must say this is decidedly cool in
the Southwest Sentinel. There is
not a single case of disease in El
Paso at present, while it is a well-
established fact that some cities
nortE of us are afflicted, with" sick-
ness of one kind or another. This
calling us the "most unhealty city
in the Southwest" is a little beyond
sense or reason.
riCKIflQ COTTON BI MACSIH1BT.
If the announcement of the suc-
cessful working of a new cotton
picking machine turns out to be
accurate one of the most-important
problems of Southern agriculture is
apparently solved. The condition
of the cotton picked from tbe field
Jby this machine is pronounced "as
good as hand picked cotton of the
same grade." The invention is
credited to Hr. C. T. Mason, Jr.,
but the principle of the machine is
no^stated. It is operated by one
horse and by one man, and, it is
Mid, will harvest two and a half
and three bales a hay.
The invention at a "cotton picker"
which, while gathering the first
crop, will not injure the plants has
hitherto defied the mechanical skill
^ of the country. Three principles,
as Professor Riley not long ago
pointed out, barer been employed to
secure this great desideratum. One
of these is by rakingoff the cotton
by points grouped comblike; an-
other is by applying spindles on
which the fibre adheres
and is wound into roils,
and a third is that of suction by
an exhaust apparatus. -But, "as
used in large machines to be haul—
•d over the rows," he says, "all so
far contrived seem better calculat-
ed to injure and waste cotton than
to gather and save it.'* The great
difficulty in devising any machine
that can be carried through a cot-
ion field and made to harvest the
yroduc^ is that the crop does not
mature and open all at once, but*at
extending over two
so that any machine in
the first xipe.gxQwih Al-
inevitably injures the » plants
and impairs their ability
the latter growths.
