Denison, Tex^ May 18, 7 p. m.—
Denison is in a fever heat of ex-
citement, and it would not take
muqh to set everything ^ablaze.
Mingled fear, anger and sorrow
pervade the entire populace.
Everybody is under arms, though
doubtless the danger is all over
now. Business is almost bus
pended, and nothing is talked of
but the horrible tragedy.
If you remember that fateful
time, the 13th of July, 1887, in
Gainesville, and can recall the
terrible tension and the suppress-
ed excitement, you can form some
idea of the state of feeling here.
The story of the horrible butch-
ery is as follows:
Some time about 10:30 last
night Mrs. Haynes, wife of Dr.
Wm. F. Haynes, was murderep at
or near her home on Woodland
Boulevard, two and one-half
miles southwest from the city
holl. She was found A short dis-
tance from her home in a ravine
with a ballet through her
brain, but whether she had
been taken from home alive, or
carried there a corpse we cannot
tell. Dr. Haynes is a prominent
man both in business and social
circles, and his wife was one of
the most beautiful and respected
adies in the city. The object of
he murderer in entering the
house was doubtless robbery.
You have already seen in the Ga
zette an account of her murder.
Soon after this, Maud Kramer,
an inmate of Madame Lester's
bagnio, and Rose Stewart, an in-
mate of Madame Rivers' place,
close by, were shot by some cold-
blooded villain of steady nerve,
such as only the deepest-dyed vil-
lain can display. He shot from
the outside and wounded each
perhaps fatally.
Three-quarters of an hour later
the same or some other demon, if
possible more devilish and cruel,
entered the home of Mrs. Hawley,
in another part of the city, and in
cold blood shot to death her beau-
tiful daughter, Miss Teen Hawley.
She was awakened by the en-
trance of the man to the room
and was shot to death while beg-
ging for her life. It is no won-
der that all these horrors follow-
ing each other so quickly roused
the whole city to a frenzy border
ing on madness.
There are numerous rumors,
theories and conjectures. Some
claim that the same devil murder-
ed all of them, and some have to
tally different theories.
Fresh foot prints in the sand at
Mrs. Hawley's show a small foot.
Whether it was all the work of
madman, or whether there were
three or four murderous devils s
work the same night, is not yet
known.
Two white men and one negro
have been locked up in the Sher
man jail, several others have been
arrested and still other suspects
are being watched in the city.
Captain Whitesides brought his
bloodhounds from Sherman, but
they failed to trail and were taken
home this evening.
Later—8 p. m.—Maud Kramer
Is still alive but her death Is ex
