Memphis, Tenn.. July 24.—Lee
Walker, the negro brute who as-
saulted Miss Mollie McCaddeu at
Bond's Station last Tuesday, was
taken from the county jail Satur-
day night at midnight by a mob
numbering about 3000 and hanged
to a telegraph pole. The mob
broke down the bars of the jail
with an iron rail, after having
forced the front doors and found
the prisoner in a cell. They took
him out and stripped him of all
clothing, and when he resisted his |
throat was cut. but before he died j
a rope was placed around his neck
and he was strung up within two
squares of the jail. After hanging
twenty minutes the lx>dy was cut
down, saturated with coal oil and
burned to a crisp. While the mob
was forcing its way into the jail
some one struck the sheriff over
the head with a chair, inflicting a
painful wound.

Last night about 10:30 an alarm

Third ward, which proved to be
