•We copy from the Albuquerque Journ-
al as follows:
'•While the Mexicau Ceniral earaings
are increasing daily She earning sof the
Yera Cruz road are diminishing, which
shows that the trade is being transferred
from Europe to the United States, in
the one year that the road has been oper-
ated all the little troubles and irregulari-
ties incident to the workings of a foreign
corporation among such people as the
Mexicans, have disappeared, and it is
doubtful if any similar road in this coun-
try runs more smoothly or harmoniously.
It only wants now the treaty of com-
merce, negotiated by General Grant and
Mr. Trescott, to be put iu operation to
assure th? Mexican Central to be a linau-
cial success, and altogive American mer-
chants and manufacturer^, several mil-
lions annually of Mexican silver that now
goes to Europe. The Mexican Central
road bed, track, bridges and equipment,
ate all iu the very best condition, and the
operation under General Manager Robin-
son as economical and satisfac-
tory in all respects. The
Mexican government is preparing
to build a large custom house at; Paso
del Norte to accommodate the large aud
increasing business. The United States
should not, with her boasted superiori-
ty and civilization, allow the Mexicans
to get ahead of them in this respect. A
large building should be started at once.
El Paso is feeling the efleet of this im-
mense business passing through it. its
building*-, capital and population arc in-
creasing, its-hotels are crowded with peo-
ple, and a general air of prosperity

A a'.Ji'ATcn from Austin intimates
that the Francklyn cattle company will be
compelled to pay rents for the lands it is
occupying in Greer couatv, or to remove
its stock. This is linht and just. There
is uo reason why the Francklyn cattle
company, composed in part of foreigner!,
should come to Texas and occupy lands
to the exclusion of all others, and that
too, freo of cost. US the lands are worth
nothing to them they should vacate them
at once. And in this connection it oc-1
ours to us that if the government (.•ontin- |
ties to keep out the settlers from the Ok-
lahoma lands,it oughf, in common justice
remove the large cattle syndicates also.
What is sauce for the goose, ought to
be sauce for the gander. There is plenty
of land left iu six or sevt-uof the extreme
northwestern counties of Texas to rear
cattle on, by sinking a lew artesian wells
here and there.

The cost per mile of building ,i rail-
road is at present not more than half
what it was when most of the lines iu the
stato weio built. An exchange, aptly
j says that ''abundance of labor ami cheap-
I ness of iron and material generally lead
practical builders and contractors toaf-
lit in that they can now build a mile of
road from $:i,00y to Jo,COO that would,two
or three years ago, have cost • 10,000.
Jfow, therefore is tha time to goto work.
If a marked revival of business occurs,
prices of labor and material may be ex-
pected to go up rapidly again and increase
tha obstacles in tlie way. These are mat-
ters worthy of attention." El Paso has
two railroads yet unbuilt that ought to
be taken in hand—the line to White Oaks,
and a line running between Lakes Guz-
man aud Santa Maria to the Casus (iran-
desand Corralites country.
In Fort Worth the people are roused up
to the importance of building more rail -
roads aud extending those already built.
Just now they want one built to Waxalni-
chie. General G. M. Dodge is Interested
in the movement, and it will probably be
a success. The people at the Fort evince
tiia right spit it—the spirit that btii t and
kept up their magnifi ent city. This re-
minds ualhatEl Paso's railroad build-
ing, as Jar an great trunk lines are con-
cerned, is by no means exhausted. A
line fiom either Wichita ot Caldwell,Kau-
nas, on an air line to El l'aso would trav-
erse a magnificent empire of unbounded
resources, that has never heard the>hriek j
of the iron lu rse.
