The republicans have elected a
substantial majority in the next

officially this week, make it cer

the next house will exceed the
democratic by at least eleven. a
republican will be elected speaker

New York, Nov. 11.—a dis-
patch to the Herald from Lima,
Peru, say;:
a bill which legalizes non-Cath
olic marriages in Peru, and which
makes legal the ceremonies per-
formed by the mayors of towns in
the presecca of two witnesses, was
sanctioned by congress. There
was great excitement when the
matter was taken up for final ac-
tion.
The clericals tried to sustatn a
motion to postpone consideration,
but on vote the motion was lost.
Then the president put the mo-
tion to close the debate and this
was done amid great applause.
During a scene of great excite-
ment and while protests were be-
ing made the measure was sanc-
tioned.
The paesage of this measure is
a great triumph for liberal ideas

New York. Nov. 11.—District
Attorney Wil]iam j. Youngs and
William f. ttowc, — —
Martin morn, neld a consultation
last night in order to ascertain
when the Thorn trial would be
brought to an end.
"Since you have decided not to
cross examine our witnesses who
are put on the stand for the pur
pose of establishing the fact that
the body at the morgue is that of
of William Guldensuppe," said
Mr. Youngs, "i should say that
we might close the entire case be
fore 'he end of this week. How
long will it take you to put in
your defense!" Mr. Howe was
isked.
"Less than a day," replied Mr.
Howe.
"That is all the time i want.
But 1 don't want to finish the case
this week. i think that will be
time enough."
"Are you sure that it will not
fake yo.: more thau one day to
put in your side of the case!"
asked Mr. Youngs in astonish-
ment.
"That's all," replied Mr. Howe.
•'It may take you a week to exam
ine all the witnesses for the prose
cution, but it will take me less
than one day to convince the jury
that Martin Thorn is innocent.
Why, the testimony of Mrs. Nack
has more than strengthened our
case. We admit that the body at
the norgue ie that of William
Guldensuppe. We admit that
Guldensuppe was killed, but we
shall prove to this court and ]ury
that it was Mrs. Nack who killed
Guldensuppe."
'Bosh, bosh," said Youngs.
"Thorn will be convicted."
"Not at all," replied the law-
yer. "Mrs. Nack admitted on the
9tand that she lured Guldensuppe
to Woodside, that she bought the
oil cloth before the man was dead
and we have found the pistol with
which she didjthe killing "
"How Is "that!" asked Mr.
Youngs.
"Why," said Mr. Howe, "she
killed him with Gnldent»uppe'e
own pistol. It was the pistol the
detective found at her house, the
eame pistol she identified in conrt
yesterday. Just watch us. The
jury is with us and i can assure
you that Martin Them will be ac-
quitted."
