to her advanced age. She was 78 i
years old at the time of her death, !
which occurred at the home ot her i

The funeral services were held

All the old settlers of Denton
coutny remember both Mrs. Dalton
I and her husband, the late Jerry
j Dalton, who die,} in 1876. She was
born in 1833 and came t0 Denton
county from Carroll county, Tenn ,
in 1 857, arriving here at a time
when Denton county was a sparsely
settled near-wilderness on the fron ■
tier. Mrs. Dalton was, it is believ-
ed, the first public school teacher
in the history of Denton county. At
any rate she drew the frlst public
money for teaching school issued by
Denton county. The school was neai
Chlnns Chapel, in the southern part
of the county, or, as it was then
known, the Pickney settlement. She
was married here in 1858 to Mr.
Dalton, also a pinoeer settler who
afterward served with distinction in
the Confederate army and later took
a prominent part in the reeonsruc-

her, Mrs. Dalton leaves one son,

Monday was National decoration
day and the graves of the Federal
dead in Denton cemeteries were de-
cortted in a unique manner. There
is no Grand Army Camp here, but
Major J. O. Berry took it upon uim-
self to decorate the graves. In the
absence of flowers he placed over
< ach grave a small nited States
flag. There are about two dozen
Federal veterans buried in Denton,
some in each cemetery, to which
the tribute was paid.

What will the prices be for thrash
ing is a question that is right now
of considerable interest among both
thrashermen and grain men and
CELL, there seems some little difference in
' the probable charges. Some men
with whom Record and1 Chronicle
reporters have talked aver that the
prices will be 10c for wheat and 0c
for oats, but the thrashermens es-
timates seem to vary from 12 to 12-
2c for wheat and from 6 to 6-
4c for oats. One thrasherman
with whom a reporter talked Thurs
day said that he was contracting
at 14c and 7c, and furnishing his
own fuel, but he was in an adjoin
ing county.
In the past prices have ranged
around 10 anil 5c with even as low-
as S and 4 cents charged at times
Thrashermen claim, however, that

COMET WAS llllK.HTKIi.
Many people watched for Halley'.-
eomet Wednesday night and were
rewarded with a better view than
on the night before. The moon did
not rise so early and the sky beini;
clear, the comet came nearer b
up to its advance notices.
Whei< viewed through even
ordinary pair of opera glasses
visitor shows up much better,
tail especially being very distinct.
There was little apparent change
from the position occupied the pre-
ceeding night, caough it is travel
irjg rapidly toward Jupiter.
As its tail is kept pointing away
from the sun, its actual movement
is almost directly opposite to thaf
which it appears to be taking by
a glance at it. Instead of moving
toward the sunt, toward which its
head points, it is moving toward
Jupiter, the bright star southeast
of it.
