Hundreds of citizens of Denton
couuty a few days since petition-
ed the commissioners' court to
grant an election by which tliey
hope to abolish the running of
saloons in the county and the
lurking temptations which are
connected with them. The court
granted the prayer of the petition
ers and ordered the election to be
held on Saturday, March 10.
The News as a public institu
tion will be expected by its re id-
era (some of whom we shall sin-
cerely but liberally differ from) to
declare its stand upon one side or
the other of this moral question.
In answer we would say,
that professing as we do to be
friendly to all tilings that tend to
develop and advance the stan-

Up to Saturday night no really
important measure had passed
both houses, and truly not ex-
ceeding half a dozen bills of gen-
eral importance outside of the Ap-
propriation bill, have been acted
upon by the committees.
The fee bill comes up Tuesday
and is going to be a, troublesome
one to handle and progress on it
is going to be slow. To do away
with the fee system is considered
by many as a very doubtful ex-
periment and legislators are going
to be very careful about adopting
the bill. It is an out and out pop-
ulist theory and it isn't going to
go down democrats very easily,
especially when its adoption may
result in marring the efficiency of
tliejdistriet and County officers.
