QEAN& CHECK
BEFORE ADDING
‘ANTI EREEZE I
It appears to this lowly scribe
j that a great sport is being ignored
; by the people of our fair city. Last
I week we were hosts to a basket-
| ball tournament. The attendance
| was, in so far as local fans were
| concerned, lousy. Last night, a
mere handful saw the Panthers
! defeat Munday Of course, basket-
j ball doesn't draw like football. I
J can't see why though, unless it’s
i because there is more chance of a
j boy getting injured playing foot-
j ball. The basketball team has lost
only two games in five starts, so
it isn t because we get beat every
time. The boys playing basketball
are some of the same ones that
played football, so it can t be be-
cause we don't like the boys play-
ing the game. And, we usually have
a chance to sec three games instead
of one, so the price can’t be the
reason for the turnout. Maybe its
because we haven't become accus-
tomed to attending the court
I games. If that s the reason, why
I not attend two or three games. I'd
venture to say that a good many
j of you football fans would also
! become basketball fans if you
watched a few games. The game is
faster; it is easier to see what is
going on because the space in
which the game is played is so
much smaller:; there are only ten
players to watch instead of 22; and.
it is more a game of skill than is
the gridiron sport.
We undoubtly saw some of the
| best officiating at the tournament
j here last week that we have seen
in a long time. Curley Hayes, who
most of you will remember as hav-
ing played first base for the Stam-
ford All Stars Softball team last
summer, is one of the best basket-
ball officials anywhere. The man
who was to work the tournament
with him, “Shorty" Lawson, is the
only official from Texas ever to
have worked a game in Madison
Square Garden “Shorty,'' it seems
had contracted to work the Ft.
Worth Coliseum last weekend at
about the same time “Curley-’ had
contracted to work the tourna-
ment here, so they split for the
weekend. Leroy Fry. filled in quite
capably for "Shorty” though. It
really is interesting to watch Hays
and Lawson work one together
though. They miss very few of the
calls, and I never saw a game I
thought was called perfect.
Now we are going to get out the
old crystal ball and find out who
will be Texas High School Foot-
ball champions . . Class AA . . .
I see a Coyote, baying brazenly at
the moon . . Class A ... I see a
team from South Texas leaving
Abilene nexi'Week rather dejected-
ly, and a bunch of boys from Lit-
tlefield whooping it up . . . That
Littlefield team really has some-
thing. Truett Little says the Class
A game in Vernon last Friday was
much better than the AA game in
Wichita Falls Saturday. Of course,
this is Littlefield's first year back
i in “A" ball, so they still remember
how the big boys play.
