WASHINGTON NEWS LETTER
Congressman Ed Gossett in his
weekly letter states that the House
was debating the Armed Services
Pay Adjustment bill. ‘The bill
seeks to minimize the alleged re-
tirement racket in the armed ser-
vices. It seems that many officers
have been retired on full pay for
minor or temporary disabilities. It
is argued that examination from
time to time should be made to
see if the disabilities still exist.
Under the existing law. if an of-
ficer is retired for disability the
act is permanent, and he draws
his full pay for life.”
Mention was made by Mr. Gos-
sett of a proposal to raise the pay
of officers. Since he wrote, this
bill has been shelved for the pres-
ent session. The need for econo-

Congressman Gossett states that
a number of controversal issues
are still up for action. Since his
letter was written news agencies
have stated that the 81st session
of Congress is likely to continue
through July.
Among the controversal Issues
are: the DP bill, public housing,
federal aid to education, compul-
sory health insurance, wage and
hour law. repeal of the Taft-Hart-
ley Act, extending of social se-
curity, a new farm program bill,
etc.
Later dispatches than the letter
state that health Insurance is dead
for the sessoin, together with the
civil rights program and others of
the near-socialistic type.
Mr. Gossett is on a sub-commit-
tee of the House Judiciary Com-
mittee to receive hearings on a
bill that would authorize the De-
partment of Justice to provide for
detention in camps or prisons all
persons ordered deported. “Under
existing law, there are now 2.278
orders of deportation outstanding
which are not enforceable. We
cannot deport these people, be-
cause their own countries will not
take them back. Many of these
people are dangerous, but they are
free to roam this country at will.
In this light it appears somewhat
ridiculous for this country to go
to such complicated ends to get
Gerhart Eisler back in this coun-
try. In my judgment, we should
have considered him a good rid-
dance, after forfeitig his outstand-
ing bonds.”
Many letters are coming to Mr.
Gossett in opposition to the pro-
posed public housing bill. And the
opposition is pretty well founded.
Our congressman has no objections
to government action in guaran-
teeing housing loans under res-
tricted conditions, but he thinks
it would be ill-aSvised for the fed-
eral government to enter the field
of residence construction. One of
the letters to the conressman call-
ed attention to a public housing
project in the City of Dallas whiefh
the government built at a cost of
$3,750,000, and sold it for $750,000.
The net results of federal con
struction would probably be less
housing at greater costs
