History may have been made Saturday
night, July 11, when the Offshore Grand
Champion of the 74th Deep Sea Roundup
slept with her parents.
Eight-year-old Kendall Owens of Port
Aransas went to bed thinking sjie had the
first place red snapper and ling in the
junior division of the tournament, and
thought that merited a night snuggled
with her parents, “with a big grin on her
face,” her mother, Beth Owens said.
Little did she know that she would
make history the next day when she
elected to be late arriving at summer
camp in order to accept her junior divi-
sion trophies.
The Deep Sea Roundup aims
to please anglers of all ages,
and the Piggy Perch Contest is
just the ticket for the youngest
of them.

The crew aboard Gunslinger caught and released a grand slam (three
billfish in one day) plus one during the Deep Sea Roundup. On Saturday,
July 11, they hooked this blue marlin, a white marlin and two sailfish. That
earned them them the Billfish Championship. No records of grand slams
during Roundup were available, but if not the only grand slam in toura-
ment history, it is at least rare.

The Gunslinger, out of Port Aransas,
brought in the billfisherman’s holy grail,
a grand slam, with a blue marlin, two
sailfish and a white marlin, to win the
billfish championship.
The Gunslinger team is not a seasoned
fishing crew. The anglers had never fished
together before Deep Sea Roundup and
four of the five had never caught a billfish
(they spent their time in the water). It was
also the first Port Aransas tournament
for the boat, a 61-foot Viking recently
has been sold and renamed Mariners Inn delivered from Florida,

Poteet was past president of the Port
Aransas Chamber of Commerce-Tourist
Bureau and a long-time member of its
marketing committee. He also served on
the Corpus Christi Area Convention and
Visitors Bureau, and was a member of the
Texas Hotel Lodging Association, Ameri-
can Hotel Lodging Association, Texas
Travel Industry Association and Coastal
Bend Regional Tourism Council.
He served on the committee to hire the
Port Aransas police chief when former
Chief Sam Russell was hired.
“Sam was one of Port Aransas' great-
est tourism assets,” said Ann Bracher
Vaughan, executive director of the cham-
ber-tourist bureau.
“He used his leadership and charisma
to promote his love of the island to all he
encountered,” she said.
Vaughan said Poteet’s “devotion to the
industry, his business, the community and
chamber leave a legacy unparalleled.”

Those funds are expected to stay

to be used for as-yet undetermined
improvements, Lenz said.
Lenz said he did not immediately
have figures for how much federal
money previously had been reserved
for a new ferry, but Port Aransas
City Manager Michael Kovacs said
it was about $2 million.
“It’s outstanding news for Port
Aransas and TxDOT, for the ferry
operations,” Lenz said. TxDOT

A $7.2 million federal grant will
fund the purchase of a new 28-car
ferry for Port Aransas, officials an-
nounced Tuesday, July 14.
The ferry still has yet to be
built, but it could be finished and
delivered before the end of 2010,
according to Russell Lenz, district
engineer of the Corpus Christi di-

The state Open Meetings Act allows
such a discussion to take place outside
public view because it could be consid-
ered a personnel matter, Kovacs said.
In addition, if a council member wants
a legal briefing from Morris on the tax
matter, that could be conducted in closed
session, because the law allows closed
sessions when a council is seeking legal
advice. However, Kovacs said the council
would only be able to hear legal advice
and couldn't go any further with the
closed-door session under that scenario.
Kovacs said the investigation began
after he heard Brown complain that the

Morris could not be reached for com-
