Parker wins national news awards
South Jetty reporter Dan Parker
has won two awards in the National
Newspaper Association’s 2009 Better
Newspaper Contest.
Parker’s story about pre-game prepa-
rations in the Marlin and Lady Marlin
locker rooms earned him first place for
Best Sports Feature Story or Series in the
non-daily division for newspapers with
circulation between 3,000 and 5,999.
A story about former Port Aransas
High School academic and athletic
stand-out Christie Campbell losing her
battle with can-
cer earned Parker
second place for
Best Obituary,
non-daily divi-
sion, circulation
less than 6,000.
Entries were
selected from
work published
during 2008.
The Better Newspaper Contest drew
1,713 entries. A total of 639 awards
were won by 143 member newspapers
in 42 states. California had the most
wins, followed by Texas and New
Mexico.
Winners will be recognized in a spe-
cial contest insert in the October issue
of Publishers’ Auxiliary, the monthly
news magazine of the NNA.
Established in 1885, the National
Newspaper Association is the voice
of America’s community newspapers
and the largest newspaper association
in the country.
Sand Slam set
Be entertained by poets and performers
at the Sand Slam on Friday, July 24, the
Tarpon Ice House, 321 N. Alister St.
Competing poets must bring at least
three selections of their own writing, as
three rounds are held before declaring a
winner.
The evening will begin at 7:30 p.m.
with an open microphone, available for '
poetry not original to the presenter. It will
then progress to the competition.
Performances are limited to three
minutes.
The monthly event is open to of all
types of poetry, but will be kept family-
friendly as teens are encouraged to attend
and compete.
Musical accompaniment is allowed.
The event is free, but donations are
being accepted to help with expenses and
prize money.
The slams, held by the City of Port
Aransas Parks and Recreation Depart-
ment on the fourth Friday of each month,
are open to the public.
